Free Surf Fishing Clinic for Kids Returns to the Gulf State Park

Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – Young anglers will have the chance to cast their lines and learn from local experts at the Gulf State Park Kids Surf Fishing Clinic this summer.

The sold out free event was open to children ages 6 to 15 and will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2025, from 8 a.m. to noon. Organizers will provide bait and a limited number of fishing poles for participants. Local fishermen will be on hand to offer tips, guidance, and "how-to" demonstrations throughout the morning.

Organizers could use more rod and reels for the kids. If you’d like to make a donation, contact the event organizer, Jordan Gooding at

The clinic will take place along the Gulf State Park beach and is designed to introduce kids to the basics of surf fishing in a fun, relaxed environment. Instructors will cover techniques such as baiting hooks, casting lines, and identifying fish species commonly found along Alabama's coast.

"I think it is one of the finest things the fishing community does for less fortunate kids in our area, as well as young visitors, giving them a hands-on opportunity to learn the basics of surf fishing."
— David Thornton, a local shore fisherman and long-time supporter of the event.

David went on to say,
"With the help of local volunteers and sponsors, this program gives kids the chance to fish today — and builds a foundation for future clinics to reach even more young anglers."

While this year’s clinic is sold out, more information is available at

The event is part of Alabama State Parks' ongoing efforts to connect families with outdoor recreation and promote conservation education along the Gulf Coast.
