Foley to Vote on $700K Cedar Street Sidewalk Project

Sidewalk, zoning, speed limits and grants are on the agenda

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — Foley will consider appropriating almost $700,000 to complete phase two of the North Cedar Street sidewalk. This portion of the project will run from Fern Street in the south to West Peachtree Avenue to the north. The winning bid was from James Brothers Excavating. It was under the budgeted amount and is projected to cost 698,984.
The city council will take up the proposal at a joint regular work session on June 2 at 4 p.m. in council chambers at city hall. Also on the agenda is a measure to approve of the Downtown Streetscape Plan Public Project as recommended by the planning commission.
During the combined regular/work session, the council will also discuss:
- Declaring June 2 as Frank and Jennie Rikard Day for the couple’s contributions to the city’s fire and police departments.
- The introductions of the city’s 2025 interns.
- Approval of amendments to the subdivision regulations in the city code of ordinances, as recommended by the planning commission.
- An introduction and first reading of an ordinance to reduce the speed limit on County Road 65.
- An introduction and first reading of an amendment to the city’s zoning ordinance as recommended by the planning commission.
- Rezoning 21.32 acres located south of County Road 12 South and east of the Foley Beach Express from agricultural open space to extended business district as recommended by the planning commission.
- Approving a retirement award. The agenda didn’t specify who was retiring or what the award was.
- Approving a new lease and subscription policy concerning buildings, land, vehicles, or equipment and “the right to use a vendor’s IT software” by the city.
- Approving an application for a Gulf Coast Resource Conservation and Development Council Grant for between $5,000 and $15,000 for projects “that address Conservation Education, Community Development, and Resource Conservation opportunities within Baldwin, Escambia, and Mobile counties.”
- A plan for capital and small asset policy and procedures that “ensures complete and accurate asset information is available for financial statement preparation, in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.”
- Accepting a portion of County Road 65 from Baldwin County. The portion is about 620 feet extending north and south of Airport Road. The council will also consider bids for repaving the portion of the road after the city takes it over.
- Approving the bids for halo tree lighting on three trees along Orange Avenue and Alston Street for $67,567.
- A resolution to approve the “Light Up the Tank Project.” There was no information on the agenda detailing the cost or location of the tank.
- A resolution to approve new flooring in city hall for $60,000.
- Approving funds to help four Foley High School track and field athletes attend the Adidas Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, North Carolina, on June 20-22. The agenda didn’t state the amount of money requested or given.
- Signing a letter of assurance to the National Naval Aviation Museum that the city will return a historic T-34B aircraft should the city no longer want it for display. Foley recently acquired the plane from the museum and plans are to display it in the city.
- Approving a proposal from Goodwyn Mills Cawood for surveying for a subdivision of two lots in the city’s industrial park.

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — An armed robbery call on May 27 led Foley police to a major investigation involving several agencies. Officers responded to Keil Trail off Dailey Lane around 6:50 p.m. after victims reported being held at gunpoint. Two firearms were stolen during the robbery. Police launched a search for the suspects immediately after arriving.

Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — Orange Beach is looking to spend $287,604 received from opioid litigation settlements. The council wants to buy automated external defibrillators for the fire department. The council will discuss authorizing the money and buying the defibrillators at an upcoming work session. They will replace aging equipment.

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — Downtown Foley is getting updates to make it safer and more enjoyable for people walking through the area. New bollards will block cars from entering pedestrian zones. Decorative lights will be added above city streets. The improvements are meant to create a more welcoming atmosphere.

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — Foley is expanding its event train schedule now that school is out and summer has started. The city is also looking for more volunteer drivers to help run the train. The event train gives rides around Heritage Park and is a popular summer activity. Volunteers are needed to help keep the train running smoothly.

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (OBA) — Gulf Shores will present an analysis of the new traffic pattern in the Gulf Pines neighborhood because of the construction of the pedestrian bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway at East Second Street and Canal Road. The 90-degree intersection had to be closed for construction. Traffic now is routed down East Third Street to East 22nd Street and then west to East Second Avenue. The new route goes through a neighborhood and past Meyer Park.

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (OBA) — Gulf Shores High School has chosen Laura Davis as its new head volleyball coach. Davis has a long history of success, both as a player and as a coach. She is known for helping student-athletes grow on and off the court. School leaders say her experience and leadership make her a great fit for the Dolphins.
