Foley Tackles Traffic Safety with New Stop Signs

Dec. 1 meeting covers traffic safety and zoning changes
Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – Foley will spend part of the last month of 2025 working on individual areas of town to improve lighting and traffic safety. A handful of streets or intersections will get new or upgraded street lights. Traffic improvements will include adding four-way stops at three intersections on Alston Street and turn lanes on South Juniper Street to a subdivision west of the roadway.
The council will meet Dec. 1 at 4 p.m. in a joint regular/work session in council chambers at city hall.
The infrastructure improvements the council will discuss include:
- A resolution approving a contract with Axis Engineering Group for professional services for Iberville Square subdivision turn lanes from South Juniper Street for $58,800. The entire project is projected to cost $350,000. This will include a southbound left turn lane onto Beignet Drive and an extended right turn radius at Iberville Drive.
- A resolution to participate in drainage improvements northwest of Cedar Street and U.S. 98 alley area for $25,000. The alley is behind the houses on U.S. 98 and West Carolyn Avenue.
- Amending the Street Department budget for sidewalk and street maintenance for $18,000 to bring a ramp at the library up to ADA standards.
- Approving street lights for the James Road-County Road 12 intersection for $2,957. The council will also consider adding a light to an existing pole for $50 on Hamilton Boulevard.
During the joint regular/work session, the council will also discuss:
- Changes to the city’s zoning ordinance with a public hearing on the change. A second public hearing is also planned for a zoning ordinance change in the section dealing with “location of mechanical systems including screening and dumpster enclosures.”
- A presentation by ARC of Gulf Coast, a group that helps citizens with developmental disabilities.
- A resolution amending the pay classification plans in general government and the police department. The council will also consider a resolution to amend the pay plan for the reorganization of the fire department.
- Approving the surplus of three Sanitation Department vehicles.
- A resolution to accept $2,700 from the Walmart Spark Good Local Grant to be used by the police department’s School Resource Officers to supplement Christmas gifts for students in Foley High School, Foley Elementary, Mathis Elementary and Foley Middle School.
- Approving the rental of Heritage Park to Lisa Yeater for the Gumbo & Alabama Slammer Festival and a variance so alcohol can be sold. The event is planned for Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
- Approving the rental of Heritage Park to Lisa Yeater for the Mudbugs and Margaritas Festival and a variance so alcohol can be sold. The event is planned for April 4-5.
- Using money previously awarded to the South Baldwin Regional Workforce Development Authority to use for work done by Riviera Utilities costing $177,135. The agenda didn’t say where the work was being done but includes water service material, water service preliminary engineering, sewer service material, sewer service preliminary engineering and light pole relocation.
- A resolution approving streetlight installation at the entrance to Meadow Run Estates subdivision for $1,750.
- Installing a four-way stop at the intersection of North Alston Street and West Peachtree Avenue. The council will consider a second resolution to locate four-way stops at South Alston Street and West Myrtle Avenue and another at South Alston Street and West Roosevelt Avenue.
- Setting public hearings to declare vacant property at 2213 Miflin Road, South Hickory Street across from the Crownwalk subdivision, 635 E. Gate Circle, 405 W. Laurel Street and 1608 S. Oak St. as public nuisances and ordering cleanups on the properties.
- A resolution asking for permission to apply for a FY26 Library Services and Technology Act Grant for a STEAM lab at the new library. STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, a curriculum being taught in schools. Gulf Shores City Schools built a new wing to its elementary school, featuring two STEAM labs, which was completed in August 2022.
- Approval of an agreement for third-party fire and life safety compliance monitoring. No other information was provided in the agenda.
