Foley City Council Approves Support For Annual Hot Air Balloon Festival

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — The Foley City Council approved plans to provide essential services for the upcoming Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival. This decision guarantees that the city will continue its long tradition of supporting one of the region's major spring events. Various municipal departments will collaborate to ensure the festival runs safely and smoothly for all attendees. Local leaders expressed their dedication to maintaining the high quality of this signature community event.

The 2026 festival is scheduled from April 30 to May 2, 2026. Most activities will take place at OWA Parks and Resort. During these dates, around 55 hot air balloons are expected to fly over the city. The event will also include popular balloon glow displays at the resort in the evening.

City Administrator Mike Thompson explained that several departments contribute to the weekend's success. The city provides in-kind services from the police, fire, street, sanitation, and parks departments. "Those kinds of services that different departments provide to the chamber help make the event go smoothly," Thompson said. He noted that the city has supported this level of assistance for many years.

The South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce hosts the event in partnership with OWA. Rachel Spear, the chamber's events and finance director, spoke to the council about the significance of this collaboration. "We're very appreciative of the city for all the support that you give us to make this signature event for Foley," Spear said. She emphasized that many people must work together to make it happen.

Earlier this year, the council also decided to increase funding for the festival. This additional money will be used to expand marketing efforts to attract more potential visitors. The city also plans to use the funds to better track the event's economic impact. Understanding how the festival influences the local economy helps leaders make informed decisions about future planning.

The festival experienced notable growth in attendance over recent years. In 2024, approximately 32,000 people attended, up from 25,000 the year before. Chamber reports indicate that restaurant revenue increased by over 30% during the festival weekend. Moreover, hotel occupancy in the area hit 95% during that period.

The Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival has earned several prestigious awards for its quality. The Alabama Tourism Department named it the event of the year in 2021. The Southeast Tourism Society also recognizes the Foley festival as one of its signature events. These honors emphasize the festival's significance to the entire state of Alabama.

Residents and visitors can look forward to seeing dozens of colorful balloons in the sky this spring. The partnership between the city and the chamber ensures a fun environment for families. With the council's approval, preparations are now moving forward for the April 30, 2026, start date. This event remains a highlight for the Foley community and the surrounding Gulf Coast area.
