Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – Foley is updating its City Council district boundaries ahead of the 2025 municipal election. Cities are required to adjust district lines after each census to reflect population changes. The new boundaries for Foley’s five districts are expected to be finalized before the August city elections.

Mike Thompson, city administrator, said cities must redraw district lines to accommodate population changes before each municipal election. The new boundaries are intended to establish five districts with similar populations.

“We analyzed it internally based upon the number of new housing starts, residential starts or annexation that we've done from the previous layout of our districts, and based upon that, we see our population as of the end of 2024 to be between 29,000 and 30,000 population,” Thompson said. “That’s what we have to redistribute and equalize among our districts.”

The Foley City Council voted Monday, March 3, to approve a first reading of the ordinance setting the new district boundaries. The ordinance will receive a final vote in an upcoming meeting.

Municipal elections in Foley and most other Alabama cities and towns will be held Aug. 26, 2025. If a runoff election is needed for any office, that election will be held Sept. 23, 2025.

Foley voters will cast ballots in the City Council race in their district. All city voters will be able to vote in the race for mayor.

In Foley, the office of mayor and the seats to represent the five City Council districts will be up for election. The term of office is four years.

In 2021, the Alabama Legislature extended the terms for municipal offices by one year so that elections would not be held the same year as presidential or state elections.
