Dining with live music, outdoor time, and community meet-ups on the calendar

Things to do on the Gulf Coast this week.

Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — The week of August 11–17 offers a broad mix across the Alabama Gulf Coast, from evening music with dinner to morning park time, skills workshops, and family meet-ups. Crowds are shifting as schools restart, which means lighter weekday lines. Heat and pop-up storms remain a factor; plan shade, hydration, and a weather check before heading out. Waterfront venues, inland parks, and in-town stops all stay in play, giving residents and visitors practical choices day by day.

Expect options that balance activity and downtime. Early in the week favors relaxed dining with live music and open-air seating, while midweek brings hands-on learning and low-stress outdoor recreation. Late week leans social, with casual gatherings by the water, community breakfasts, and spectator competition on the beach. Cap it with an easy Sunday cool-down and a small-business visit before the next school week begins.

Doc’s Seafood has been a well-known beach dining experience for decades, offering a laid-back atmosphere amid the hustle and bustle of island life during both the peak and off-seasons. Seafood lovers flock from across the globe, willing to wait as long as it takes for a seat at this unique dining venue. It’s no surprise that the newer location, which has a slightly different vibe, has also attracted a bustling crowd and loyal patrons. Located on Beach Road, this spot features a menu that combines both seafood and steak options. A standout feature of this location is its spacious green lawn, which boasts an outdoor turf patio. This bright, green area adds a touch of class and comfort, creating a warm, family-friendly atmosphere that feels like you're stepping onto a resort lawn for the day. The main attraction here centered around this feature is the "Live on the Lawn" experience, providing live musical entertainment right at your table as you dine. With friendly staff and performances from the Tim Nowell Duo, this is one Monday night you’ll find yourself looking forward to all week long. Additionally, this week marks the hiring phase for the new third Doc’s Seafood location set to open soon in Foley, so be sure to check back for updates on its grand opening.

Adventure thrives in these regions, particularly within our park systems. Beyond the traditional beach activities, we offer two remarkable outdoor recreation venues: the award-winning Gulf State Park and the Graham Creek Nature Preserve, located off the island. Both sites operate daily from dawn until dusk, providing an array of activities tailored for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can utilize personal watercraft or rent canoes and kayaks from local vendors. The launch site is equipped with a fixed ramp and a floating dock, allowing for easy access to tranquil waters where one can observe local flora and fauna. Disc golf aficionados will find four full 18-basket courses available, equipped with concrete tee pads designed to accommodate both novice and experienced players. For those interested in archery, the dedicated range features a shooting tower and is structured to facilitate skill development for beginners and seasoned archers alike. This family-friendly environment is designed to ensure accessibility for all skill levels. Picnic facilities, including tables and benches, and open spaces can be found at the opening of the trails and along trails, offering convenient resting spots for visitors to recharge while enjoying the natural surroundings. Various modes of transport—bicycles, wagons, strollers, and of course, foot traffic—are encouraged around the park. However, be cautious on the unpaved trails, which are primarily intended for hikers and off-road cyclists; adequate hydration is recommended. Graham Creek invites you to explore the area today plus continue to engage with the bountiful  seasonal events. Additionally, they have several rented venue options available throughout the park, perfect for any gatherings you may need to plan. Enjoy your adventure!
