Downtown Foley Alley Closure Set For Crosswalk Mural Project
Work begins this weekend as part of a larger beautification effort

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — A section of alley in downtown Foley is preparing for a makeover. The City of Foley has announced that the North Alston Street alley, between West Laurel Avenue and West Jessamine Avenue, will be temporarily closed. This closure is necessary for crews to finish work on a new decorated crosswalk. The project is part of a broader effort to add colorful murals to several downtown crosswalks.
The alley will be closed starting at 6 a.m. on Sunday, March 15, and is expected to reopen at 6 a.m. on Monday, March 23. This provides crews with eight full days to complete the work. The project is funded through a grant from Main Street America, a national program that supports the growth of historic downtown districts.
The alley behind the Truist Bank building on North Alston Street will be closed. Despite the closure, customers can still access the bank. The Truist Bank drive-thru and ATM will remain open throughout the construction period.
Access to the area will also be available for those who need it. Drivers and pedestrians can still reach the area via the West Jessamine Avenue entrance. The west alley entrance will remain open during the closure. The city is ensuring that nearby businesses and customers are not completely cut off during construction.
The crosswalk mural project highlights a growing trend among cities to use public art to enhance their downtown areas. Painted crosswalks are implemented nationwide to make streets more visually attractive while also highlighting pedestrian zones. The murals can help slow traffic and foster a more walkable, welcoming environment for shoppers and visitors.
The City of Foley thanked residents and visitors in advance for their understanding. "Thank you for your patience as we continue enhancing downtown Foley," the city said in its announcement. Officials hope the project will be one of many improvements that give downtown a fresh, lively appearance.
