City of Gulf Shores Earns National Recognition for Cycling Efforts
Backcountry trails and new plans boost award score

Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – The City of Gulf Shores has received a national Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community award. The honor comes from the League of American Bicyclists and recognizes the city’s dedication to improving cycling opportunities. This puts Gulf Shores among a select group of cities across the country. The award shows how the city is enhancing quality of life through better biking infrastructure.
The Silver-level award was announced in May 2025. It highlights the city’s investments in trails, safety programs, and connectivity. Key efforts include the development of the Baldwin County Bicycle and Pedestrian Connectivity Plan and major infrastructure upgrades. These initiatives support safe cycling for all ages and skill levels.
A major feature that helped earn the award is the
Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail System. This trail system has over 28 miles of paved paths through diverse ecosystems. It connects parks, neighborhoods, and natural areas in and around Gulf Shores.
“This Silver-level designation reflects our ongoing commitment to making Gulf Shores a safer, more accessible community for cyclists of all ages and abilities,” said Andy Bauer. He pointed to the city’s growing trail system and new projects aimed at building a sustainable transportation network.
The League of American Bicyclists grades communities on things like education, infrastructure, and safety. Gulf Shores showed strong results in all areas, earning its place in the Silver category.
This award is valid for four years. During that time, Gulf Shores plans to keep improving its biking programs and facilities. The goal is to make the city even more bicycle-friendly for both residents and visitors.
