Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Warns About Crypto Payment Scam
Residents urged to hang up and call authorities if contacted

Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a growing cryptocurrency scam targeting local citizens. The scam involves criminals pretending to be law enforcement or government officials. These scammers then pressure people to pay fake fines, tickets, or bail using Bitcoin. Many victims have been tricked into thinking they could avoid arrest by sending cryptocurrency.
The Sheriff’s Office began posting warning signs on Bitcoin kiosks across Baldwin County in late July 2025. Their Intel Unit has been identifying the machines one by one to help prevent more people from falling for the scam. The department says no real agency will ever ask for payment in Bitcoin or any kind of cryptocurrency.
Scammers often create a sense of urgency or fear, telling victims they must act fast to avoid jail. They might use fake caller ID numbers that look like government offices. Victims are told to stay on the phone and go straight to a Bitcoin ATM.
Officials are urging anyone who receives a suspicious call to hang up and report it immediately. “Do not engage,” the department advises. “When in doubt, call us before you become a victim.” You can reach the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office at: 251-937-0202.
Law enforcement hopes that the new warning signs will alert people before they send any money. If you’re unsure about a call, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to call them directly. They stress that being cautious can prevent people from losing hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
