New Turn Lanes and Signals Make Travel Safer for Residents

Traffic is moving again at Baldwin County 12 and Alabama 59 after detours that lasted several months. Work is continuing on the state project to improve the intersection.

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — Drivers in Baldwin County can now use a major traffic route that has been closed for months. The intersection of Baldwin County 12 and Alabama 59 in Foley is open again to vehicles. Traffic is flowing smoothly with temporary road striping in place. The Alabama Department of Transportation continues work on intersection improvements.

The intersection closure began in February 2025 as part of a state highway enhancement project. Construction crews are working to widen the highway and add new turn lanes at the busy crossing.

Foley Mayor Ralph Hellmich confirmed that while construction continues, the road is now safe for travel. “They still need to install mast arms and complete other work, but the road is functioning,” he said.

A four-way stop sign installed during construction will become a permanent fixture. Residents at The Cottages have expressed appreciation for the slower traffic speeds in their neighborhood.

The improvement project includes new right-turn lanes on both north and south Alabama 59. Baldwin County 12 will gain both left and right-turn lanes. Workers will also upgrade traffic signals and extend culverts.

McElhenney Construction Company leads the $1.83 million project. ALDOT expects all work to finish by fall 2025.
