Annual Event Encourages Neighbors To Trade Plants And Gardening Tips

Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (OBA) — Gardeners along the Alabama Gulf Coast will have a chance to grow their skills and their collections at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo this month. The zoo invites the public to a community seed-and-plant swap to bring people together in a fun, hands-on way. Organizers say the gathering is designed for everyone from first‑time gardeners to seasoned experts. The event also offers visitors an additional reason to explore the zoo while exchanging plants and ideas.

National Seed Swap Day is celebrated every January to help communities share seeds, stories, and the joy of growing something new. The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo will mark the occasion with its 4th Annual Seed and Plant Swap on Saturday, January 31, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event takes place at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo and is included with paid admission or membership, giving guests access to both the swap and the animal exhibits.

At the heart of the celebration is the simple act of sharing. Guests are encouraged to bring seeds or plants from their own gardens to swap with other attendees. Organizers say the goal is to keep the art of gardening thriving from one generation to the next by making it easy for neighbors to exchange what they grow.

Throughout the day, visitors will find gardening information tables where they can pick up tips on soil health, planting seasons, and caring for home gardens. Live demonstrations will offer step‑by‑step guidance, allowing guests to see techniques in action and ask questions on the spot. Vendor booths will also be set up, giving local businesses and plant enthusiasts a chance to showcase tools, supplies, and unique plants.

The zoo plans to bring some of its animal ambassadors to the event as well. Guests may meet a few of these animals up close while they browse the swap tables and learning stations. The mix of wildlife encounters and gardening education is meant to highlight the connections between healthy habitats and healthy gardens.

In addition to the special activities, the zoo is offering a break on admission prices throughout the month. Visitors can receive 26 percent off admission every Saturday and Sunday in January, including the day of the Seed and Plant Swap. Zoo personnel say the discount makes it a good time for families to both explore the exhibits and discover new plants to take home.

The event's spirit centers on connection, sustainability, and community. Organizers hope gardeners will leave with new seeds, fresh ideas, and new friends who share a love of growing things. Those interested in taking part as vendors or presenters can email
