Local companies have begun to post jobs and job fairs

Help Wanted in Orange Beach

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The countdown has started to spring break and summer, that means local businesses in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores have started hiring for the season and listing their available positions. The first week of March is the beginning of many collegiate spring breaks and Alabama primary schools begin the breaks March 15th.

Due to the shortage of staffing in recent years, local companies now make a strong effort to recruit new staff members early so they have time to train before the season arrives. Some organizations like Flora-BamaShrimp Basket and CoastAL have announced the job fairs this week. SnagAJob, an online employment service, is currently showing 515 available positions.

In the past two years, staff members have seen wages rise, especially along the Alabama coast. According to ZipRecruiter, Alabama ranks 22nd in hourly wages, but the coastal hospitality positions are among the highest in the state. Local companies have used incentives, training and bonuses to attract new employees and retain current staff.

One of the larger local hospitality companies, Flora-Bama, stated in a press release "Flora-Bama has a focused search for back of house employees for the restaurants and offers wage incentives to fill these positions. Starting wages are as follows - $18/hour for dishwashers, $20/hour for prep cooks and oyster shuckers, and $22/hour for line cooks."

The south Baldwin County area also has several hospitality training programs provided for local students. Coastal Community College and Gulf Shores City Schools have hospitality programs. The South Baldwin Chambers provides the Gateway Career Connections to help businesses and potential staffing to find each other.
