Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — As Alabama nears the peak of its spring tornado season, Governor Kay Ivey is reminding families and businesses to be prepared for extreme weather conditions. On Friday, she encouraged Alabamians to participate in the state’s annual Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday. This event allows shoppers to purchase emergency supplies without paying state sales tax. Local city and county governments may also opt to waive their own sales taxes on eligible items.

The tax holiday starts at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, February 20, 2026, and ends at midnight on Sunday, February 22, 2026. It is scheduled to help residents stock up before severe weather risks increase in March and last through May. Alabama’s weather can change quickly during this period, with tornadoes, flooding, and heavy rain all possible.

“In Alabama, we experience just about every kind of weather you can imagine – winter cold snaps, spring tornadoes, summer hurricanes, flooding rains, and plenty of sunshine in between,” Governor Ivey said. “We can’t control the forecast, but we can control how prepared we are for the unknown. This sales tax holiday gives every Alabama family the opportunity to get ready, rain or shine, and that diligence can make all the difference.”

Items eligible for tax exemption include flashlights, batteries, weather radios, and first-aid kits priced at $94 or less. Portable generators priced at $1,564 or less will also be tax-free over the weekend. According to state officials, these supplies can be crucial during power outages or flash flooding.

Alabama Emergency Management Agency Director Jeff Smitherman stated that the weekend provides a smart and affordable way to prepare. “Severe weather can occur at any time, but proper preparation can make all the difference,” he said. “This sales tax holiday is an ideal opportunity to gather essential supplies to better prepare your family for the upcoming severe weather season. Being prepared is the first step toward building a more resilient Alabama.”

Alabama Department of Revenue Commissioner Vernon Barnett agreed, urging families to make the most of this savings opportunity. “This is an annual opportunity, and it arrives at an ideal time for families across Alabama,” Barnett said. “I urge residents to take advantage of this weekend to buy critical safety supplies that help keep you and your loved ones safe during severe weather and enjoy the savings that come with it.”
