Patriotic Memorial Day Weekend Festivities at OWA Parks & Resort

Foley, Ala. - (OBA) - OWA Parks & Resort is set to commemorate Memorial Day weekend with festive events celebrating both the nation's fallen veterans and the beginning of summer. The resort promises an action-packed weekend filled with entertainment, patriotism, and a tribute to those who’ve fallen serving our country.


The celebration begins on Friday, May 26, at 4 pm with a lively Summer Kickoff Party, including a foam truck party, a historical scavenger hunt, lawn games, and more. As the sun sets, Tropic Falls will host a Dive In Movie Night at Big Water Bay from 6-8 pm, featuring a screening of the popular film "Moana" on a massive 48-foot LED screen. Admission to Tropic Falls is required to attend the Dive In Movie Night.


The fun continues on Saturday and Sunday, with a variety of special performances lined up. From street dancers offering quick hip hop lessons to local bands and musicians playing live on OWA Island, there's something for everyone. Music fans should be sure to catch the Velcro Pygmies on Saturday evening. A spectacular fireworks display is also planned for Saturday, May 27, starting at 8:50 pm.


In addition to the performances, there will be activities such as the Poppy Flower Activity near Native Treasure in Downtown OWA and an American Flag Handprint T-Shirt event. The weekend's events are free to attend, excluding the movie night at Tropic Falls. All activities are complimentary for guests.


OWA Parks & Resort, adorned in red, white, and blue, invites everyone to join the Memorial Day weekend festivities, honor the nation's veterans, and welcome summer in a grand way.


Below is the schedule of events for Memorial Day Weekend: 


Friday, May 26:

4-8pm – Tuki Meet & Greets in Downtown and Tropic Falls

4-8pm – Summer Kickoff Party (Foam Truck Party (4:30-7pm), scavenger hunt, lawn games, and activity sheet)

6-8pm – Dive In Movie Night at Tropic Falls Wave Pool featuring Moana. General Admission to Tropic Falls is required.


Saturday, May 27:

2-6pm – Poppy Flower Activity located near Native Treasure in Downtown OWA

2-6:35pm – Popup hip hop street dance performances and quick lessons from QLD Presents.

4-8pm – Lawn Games on OWA Island

5-6:30pm – Live Music from The Defrosters on OWA Island

7-9pm – Live Music from Velcro Pygmies on OWA Island

8:50pm Fireworks viewable throughout the property


Sunday, May 28:

2-6pm American Flag Handprint T-Shirt near Native Treasures (limit 1 per person while supplies last)

5-6:30 – Live Music by Meredith Hicks on OWA

7-9pm – Live Music from Wes Loper on OWA Island

Superintendent Matt Akin announced to the City Council that the celebration would take place on Wednesday the 15th at LuLu's in Gulf Shores. The festivities will begin at 6 PM.
Brookman's Smokehouse To Go is now the Fire Smoked Fish Company

Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – Brookman's Smokehouse To Go, a popular local eatery known for its smoked fish dishes, has announced a rebranding initiative. The restaurant will now operate under the name "FIRE SMOKED FISH COMPANY" to better represent its core offerings and facilitate future growth.

Perdido Key, Fla. – (OBA) – The Gulfarium CARE Center will be releasing several rehabilitated sea turtles back into the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday, May 15th, at Perdido Key Public Beach Access #4. The event will begin at 11am and is expected to last about 10–15 minutes, weather permitting. In the case of inclement weather, such as storms or lightning, the release will be rescheduled.

The Orange Beach High School softball team had a scare involving one of its star players during state tournament play in Oxford on May 13. A bad hop caught shortstop Daigle Wilson in the face and broke her nose and is causing swelling. Wilson was on the field for about 30–45 minutes and was loaded on a board as a precaution since she suffered a head injury.
Foley Fire Department Ups Capacity with New Truck

The Foley Planning Commission will meet in a regular session on May 15 in council chambers at city hall. During the meeting, the commission will discuss: A request to extend the plan of the Knoll Subdivision located in the planning jurisdiction at the northwest corner of County Road 16 and County Road 65. The parcel is 38.87 acres and is currently vacant and zoned rural residential. Staff will recommend approval of the request.
Orange Beach Billfish Classic Tournament Rescheduled Due to Weather

The Orange Beach Billfish Classic, originally slated to begin this weekend, has been rescheduled due to an unfavorable weather forecast. The annual fishing tournament will now see boats departing on Monday, May 20th at noon, with activities concluding on Wednesday, May 22nd.
