Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The Orange Police Department is looking to build a multi-purpose facility on the Justice Center campus to provide extra storage and other amenities. The goal of the new facility will mainly be for storage but officials are asking for some additional amenities. Officials say the department has about $100,000 budgeted for the project.

The city council will discuss the facility at a joint regular/work session on Nov. 4 in council chambers at city hall. The new police building will be addressed in the work session and could come up for a vote on Nov. 18.

“Currently, we have approximately $200,000 worth of equipment (digital speed signs, digital billboards, MUVs, trailers, etc.) left out in the elements,” a memo from Interim Police Chief Steve Brown states. “We also intend to create office space for a fleet manager, storage for additional equipment to free up space in the main PD, and an on-site gym for personnel.”

The council will also discuss a contract with GeoCon for $3,000 for geotechnical and engineering services for the new police facility.

On Monday, Nov. 3, the council had an organizational meeting at the Community Center to seat the new council. Mayor Tony Kennon and councilmember Jerry Johnson were reelected, Jack Robertson won the seat vacated by Jeff Boyd who lost in the mayor’s race and councilmember Jeff Silvers was unopposed. Ginger Harrelson unseated council member Annette Mitchell and Robert Stuart won the seat formerly occupied by Joni Blalock who decided not to run.

During the regular session, the council will:

  • Consider approving $1.8 million in payment for goods and services from Oct. 23-Nov. 7.
  • Have a public hearing and second reading of an ordinance change related to home-based recreational vehicle rentals. The council will also consider a change to the golf cart ordinance with a second reading and a public hearing.
  • Discuss approving a liquor license for Sunliner Diner set to open at 26035 Perdido Beach Boulevard east of Cotton’s restaurant.
  • Consider defibrillators owned by the city as surplus and donating them to the Alabama Charter Fishing Association.
  • A contract with JJPR from Daphne for public relations and marketing services.
  • A contract with Heidi Lemon for performance dance instruction for the city’s production of “Guys and Dolls.”
  • Discuss buying a Ford F-350 four-by-four crew cab pickup for the Sportsplex for $49,116 and a Ford F-150 supercrew cab pickup for the Utilities Department for $37,380.
  • Consider a contract with Brett Blevins for tennis racket stringing services.
  • Discuss reappointing Ryan Beebe and McGee Scarbrough to the Board of Adjustments serving through September of 2028.
  • Discuss appointing a member of the city council to the city planning commission. Annette Mitchell sat on the board until she lost in municipal elections in August to Ginger Harrelson. Current commissioner Jack Robertson won a council seat in those same elections. Newly elected councilmember Robert Stuart was president of the planning commission and is a member of the Orange Beach Board of Education.

During the work session, the council will discuss:

  • Appointing Jamie Logan as city attorney, Renee Eberly as city clerk, Ford Handley as city treasurer/finance director, Jeff Smith as fire chief and Trent Johnson as interim police chief.
  • Authorized signatures on bank depositories.
  • Discuss amending the fee schedule for the Orange Beach Shooting Complex so a resident’s single membership would be $125 and family members can be added for $25 apiece. Non-resident single memberships are available for $200 with $25 for each additional family member.
  • Consider a contract with GeoCon to provide construction materials testing for the new fire training facility for $20,000.
  • Discuss an updated appraisal for the Event Center from the Appraisal and Consultant Group for $10,000.
  •  Consider a contract with Gerald Mills for direction in the city’s production of “Guys and Dolls.
  • Discuss a public hearing date for an ordinance change to the Turquoise Village planned unit development to build Jones Duplexes on 7.9 acres east of the
  • Turquoise Place parking garage. Plans call for 10 duplexes and 18 single-family homes for a total of 38 units. The suggested day was Nov. 18.
