Reflecting on 40 Years of Orange Beach History

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The City of Orange Beach marks its 40th year as an incorporated city today, August 1st, 2024, reflecting on a rich history that stretches back much further. While Orange Beach officially became a city in 1984, the community's roots date back to at least 1838, with property deeds evidencing its early settlement.

The turning point for modern Orange Beach came in the aftermath of Hurricane Frederic in 1979. The devastating storm brought widespread attention to the area, which led to a significant building boom. The first condominiums were constructed in 1984, signaling the beginning of a rapid expansion that highlighted the need for local governance and control. In response, citizens voted to incorporate that same year. The election for a mayor and city council followed, with officials sworn in by October 15, 1984. Orange Beach started its journey as a city with 1,010 official residents, operating initially from a room in the Community Center.

Notable contributions to the city’s development include those from John and Marjorie Snook. The Snooks, owners of Gulf Telephone Company, donated five acres for the municipal complex, which opened in September 1988. Their efforts were foundational in establishing essential services in the city. For instance, John Snook developed the first wireless telephone system in the United States in 1956, utilizing hand-held phones linked to Gulf Telephones’ switching system in Foley from a tower in Orange Beach.

Electric service was introduced to Orange Beach in 1948, followed by the establishment of the Orange Beach Volunteer Fire Department in 1961. Public services expanded with the introduction of a public water system in 1974 and sewer services in 1982. The city’s first local police protection began in 1985.

Orange Beach established its own city school system, separating from the Baldwin County Public School System. The Orange Beach City Council voted on March 15, 2022, to create this new system, which officially began operations on July 1, 2022. This move aimed to provide a more tailored educational experience for local students. The first Orange Beach City School Board was formed in April 2022, with Robert Stuart elected as its president. The new system includes Orange Beach Elementary and Orange Beach Middle & High School, serving approximately 1,250 students in grades K4-12.

Orange Beach has grown significantly over the decades. By 2020, the population had reached 8,095, a dramatic increase from its humble beginnings. Today, Orange Beach is renowned for its tourism, beautiful beaches, and vibrant community life. It is home to various attractions, including the Orange Beach Indian and Sea Museum and Robinson Island, purchased by the city in 2003 as a wildlife sanctuary.

As Orange Beach celebrates this milestone, the city continues to thrive, maintaining its charm and appeal as a beloved Gulf Coast destination. The city's commitment to preserving its history while fostering growth ensures that Orange Beach will remain a vibrant community for years to come.
