Gulf Shores International Airport Undergoing $15 Million Terminal Expansion

Additions to include outdoor patio, nursing room, retail, food and beverage space

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (OBA) — Officials with the Gulf Shores International Airport (GUF/JKA) broke ground on a $15 million terminal expansion in response to “extraordinary” passenger growth.

Airport Director Jesse Fosnaugh said the construction is aimed at meeting the needs of passengers.

“We have been in lockstep with Allegiant throughout this process,” said Fosnaugh. “Measured growth allows for greater route scheduling opportunities, increased space for our passengers, and more supporting infrastructure. Even though we are growing, we will keep the airport experience quick, easy, inexpensive, and cheerful. The ‘small-community’ feel of the airport is still paramount to our mission.”

The terminal improvements will include an outdoor patio, a mothers’ nursing area and expanded food, beverage and retail spaces.

TripTek Construction LLC was awarded the construction contract. Construction is expected to be complete by May 2027 to address increased summer travel.

In June this year, the airport saw record growth with over 34,000 passengers. The air service operated at 78% occupancy on planes.

Earlier this spring, the airport was awarded a $2 million FAA Airport Terminal Program grant, funded through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). The FAA program prioritizes airport projects which elevate the traveler’s experience and Fosnaugh said Gulf Shores International is leaning into that mission.
