Gulf Shores City Council Reviews Local Bars' Licenses
Mudbugs and Cohiba Await License Decisions

Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – Two Gulf Shores bars that have faced scrutiny are looking to renew business licenses each having to meet conditions in the past year and the future.
The two are Mudbugs Pub located about two blocks north of the beach on the east side of State Route 59 and Cohiba Dunes in the Pelican Place Shopping Center.
On Jan. 30, Cohiba Dunes was issued a 90-day license and upon review in May received a business license through the rest of 2023. There will be a public hearing on the business license on Jan. 22 during the regular council meeting.
The license will be issued based on the club meeting 17 conditions including screening of staff, alcohol training for staff, and clearing the building at 2 a.m., among others. Deputy Police Chief Dan Netermeyer and Revenue Supervisor Layla Andrews will recommend the council issue the license.
Mudbugs was issued a conditional license on March 10 and in June, the city council extended it for the rest of 2023. The council is expected to OK the license for 2024 during the Jan. 8 regular session. According to city staff, Mudbugs has met all conditions placed on the bar and the new license will allow the business to stay open until 2 a.m. at which time the bar and parking lot must be cleared.
During the meeting, the council will also discuss:
- Honoring Lt. Justin Parks as the city’s firefighter of the quarter for the last quarter of 2023 and was nominated by Fire Marshal George Surry. Parks recently moved into the fire marshal’s office and was praised for his work there in the nominating letter.
- Approving an assembly permit for the Shaka Beach Bash sand volleyball tournament at Gulf Place on March 22-24.
- Issuing a conditional use permit for Waterway 101 located at 101 East 22nd Avenue directly west of the State Route 59 bridge. Developers want to use the seven cottages on .37 acres for vacation rentals.

- veterinarian facility on the east side of State Route 59 and just south of Coastal Gateway Boulevard.

- Authorizing a grant application to the Alabama Department of Transportation for $253, 562 to be used for resurfacing streets in 2024. The city will have to match it with $50,000 to be used for construction engineering and inspections for the project. See related story.
