Gulf Shores City Council Changes Rental Unit Signs
The council reflected on the Mardi Gras success
Gulf Shores, Ala. — (OBA) — The Gulf Shores City Council had a congratulatory start to this week's meeting. The city Programs & Events Manager, Brigette Reynolds, praised to city and participants for their efforts. Awards were given for for selected floats that took part in the parade.
Grant Brown, Director of Recreation & Cultural Affairs, requested an assembly permit for two events. One was the Badger Beach Bash volleyball tournament and the other was the annual Ballyhoo Festival in the Shelby Landing area of the Gulf State Park. Both were approved without any opposition.
A public hearing was held on Ordinance 2201 concerning vacation rental signage. Planning Director, Scott Stephens, provided a background about the current ordinance and stated that the signs have proliferated and placement is improper.
Mr. Stephens said the new ordinance would decrease the clutter and clean up the public right-of-way. He further added that all future signs would require a permit from the planning department. The unit signage ordinance is posted below:
The public was permitted to include their opinions. Jeff Gaberino of Gulf Shores Vacation Rentals spoke to the council about what he thought were difficult rules. He complained about the rule changes in his 20 years of business. He spoke about derogatory language from specific council members and that the ordinance was going to hurt his business.
After some discussion was held with members of the council arguing that the ordinance was well planned and suggestions were considered in prior meetings, Gaberino walked away stating "you've hurt business today, shame on you."
The ordinance was approved and adopted by the council.
