Bear Point Drainage Study Aims to Improve Stormwater Management in Orange Beach
The study maps existing infrastructure and identifies areas at risk of flooding
Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — Orange Beach is closely examining how stormwater moves through one of its neighborhoods. Thompson Engineering presented a drainage basin study and a stormwater master plan for the Bear Point area to the City Council. The study aims to help the city better understand and manage its drainage system. Engineers outlined findings and recommendations during Tuesday's council meeting.
The project focused on the Bear Point Drainage Basin and began with the goal of mapping the area's existing stormwater infrastructure. Engineers also modeled how the system performs under current and future storm scenarios to pinpoint locations at risk of flooding.
In addition to identifying problem areas, the study developed a set of best management practices. It also included a list of recommended projects to improve the management of stormwater runoff by the drainage system across the Bear Point area.
Funding for the project came from two sources. The Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council, in partnership with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, covered 80% of the cost. The City of Orange Beach contributed the remaining 20%.
