Gulf Shores Celebrates Bike Month with National Recognition

Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – The City of Gulf Shores has been awarded the Silver-Level Bicycle Friendly Community designation by the League of American Bicyclists. This honor places Gulf Shores among a select group of U.S. cities committed to cycling.

The award highlights Gulf Shores’ efforts to create a safer, more connected place for cyclists of all ages and abilities. It also recognizes the city's major investments in bike trails and active transportation infrastructure.

A major part of the city's biking success is the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail. This system includes more than 28 miles of paved paths linking parks, neighborhoods, and natural habitats across Gulf Shores.

The city was also praised for its role in developing the Baldwin County Bicycle and Pedestrian Connectivity Plan. Gulf Shores has improved infrastructure to support safer biking and walking routes.

To mark the achievement, Mayor Robert Craft and the City Council proclaimed May 2025 as Bike Month. The announcement was made during Monday's council meeting.

Throughout May, residents can take part in events that encourage bike riding for all ages. The city wants to promote healthier living and build an active community through these events.

City planner Andy Bauer said the award reflects Gulf Shores’ focus on wellness, safety, and sustainability. He emphasized the importance of biking for both recreation and transportation.

The League of American Bicyclists rates communities based on infrastructure, safety, education, and community support. The Silver-level status is valid for four years.

As part of Bike Month in May, the City of Gulf Shores has planned a series of fun and engaging biking events for the whole community. From casual rides to school and work to a month-long challenge, there’s something for everyone—regardless of age or experience. These events aim to get more people moving, promote safer streets, and highlight the city’s commitment to active living. Whether you're riding for fun, fitness, or transportation, it's a great time to hop on a bike and discover all the ways Gulf Shores supports cycling.
