With decades of experience and locally sourced products, Gulf Coast business owners are building something beyond the tourist season

Shop Local Businesses

Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) —  From a butcher shop with more than half a century of expertise to a coastal gift store with roots stretching back to 2000, the Alabama Gulf Coast continues to attract a diverse mix of locally driven businesses. Orange Beach and Gulf Shores are home to a growing number of independent eateries, specialty retailers, and neighborhood gathering spots that together shape the character of the region. Several of these businesses have carved out distinct identities — whether through fresh-never-frozen beef, hand-cut steaks, or Irish pub fare served until the early morning hours. Collectively, they reflect a Gulf Coast dining and retail scene built less on franchise formulas and more on owner investment, craft, and community ties.

Bird Dog Chicken Co.
is located at 4575 Orange Beach Blvd., Suite 106, in Orange Beach. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week, offering wings, chicken tenders, chicken sandwiches, fried shrimp, and more than 10 sauces. Guests order at the counter, and food is prepared to order. The menu also includes breakfast biscuits, fried okra, jalapeño poppers, and a kids' menu featuring two chicken tenders or a grilled cheese.

The Meat Mart at Orange Beach
is located at 4528-B Easy St. and bills itself as the first and only full-service butcher and seafood shop on the Alabama Gulf Coast. The shop opened on Memorial Day Weekend in 2011. The Meat Mart offers hand-cut Certified Angus Beef USDA Prime and Choice steaks, handmade sausages, homemade beef jerky, handmade crab cakes, sushi-grade tuna, and twice-baked potatoes. The shop also carries a selection of sauces, spices, and heat-and-eat prepared dishes.

Emporium@C
is a coastal gift shop with two locations. The first is in the Rouses Shopping Center at 25405 Perdido Beach Blvd., Suite 11, in Orange Beach, and the second is in the Villagio Perdido Town Centre at 13700 Perdido Key Drive in Pensacola, Florida. The shop opened in 2000 as Emporium Gifts & More and was acquired by the current owners in 2019. Emporium@C carries distinctive gifts, jewelry, apparel, home décor, collegiate merchandise, and works by local Gulf Coast artists and authors. The store's inventory rotates seasonally, with items available for purchase both in-store and online.

Bleus Burger
is a full-service restaurant and bar at 3800 Gulf Shores Pkwy., Suite 240, in the Pelican Place at Craft Farms Shopping Center in Gulf Shores. The kitchen prepares dishes from scratch daily, using 100 percent fresh, never-frozen Certified Angus Beef chuck from Evans Meats, an Alabama-based, family-owned supplier. Half-pound hand-smashed burgers are served alongside 15 craft beers on tap, handcrafted cocktails, and a rotating lineup of sides featuring house-made tots, onion rings, fried okra, and mac and cheese. The restaurant is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Undertow Bar and Grill
is located at 25025 Canal Rd. in Orange Beach and is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 3 a.m. The bar and grill serves flame-grilled burgers and in-house breaded chicken tenders. On Saturdays and Sundays, it offers an all-you-can-eat weekend boil from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., or until sold out, featuring Royal Red shrimp, crawfish, Conecuh sausage, roasted corn on the cob, and new potatoes for $19.99. The Undertow also offers pool tables, karaoke, and live entertainment, giving it a laid-back island atmosphere that draws a strong local following.

O'Choppers Almost Irish Pub
is located at 25908-J Canal Rd. in Orange Beach and is open Wednesday through Sunday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. The pub serves Irish-inspired favorites, including Guinness shepherd's pie, Guinness Irish stew, fish and chips, and a ribeye steak, along with sandwiches, appetizers, and a full bar. O'Choppers also hosts live music and is a popular late-night stop for locals, particularly after events at The Wharf Amphitheater nearby.
