Foley to Discuss Zoning, Speed Limits and Sewer Cost-Sharing at Tonight’s Meeting

Public hearing set for zoning and animal ordinance updates

Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – The Foley City Council will consider an emergency measure to replace a failing air conditioning unit at city hall. The issue will be taken up during its regular meeting. The council will also address a lengthy agenda of city matters. The meeting takes place in council chambers.
The council will meet at 4 p.m. on May 5. Shearer Supply submitted the lowest bid to replace the unit at $8,929. The city is requesting a total of $11,000 to complete the project. Funding includes parts, labor, and any contingencies.
During the joint regular/work session, the council will:
- Have a public hearing and second reading to consider changes in the city’s zoning ordinance concerning domesticated animals and joint occupancy or more than one dwelling on a lot.
- Declaring May 4-10 as Small Business Week, the month of May as Building Safety Month and May as Mental Health Month in Foley.
- Have a first reading of an ordinance to accept rights-of-way and infrastructure maintenance in phases two and three of Lakeview Gardens.
- Have a second reading on an ordinance change for southwest quadrant traffic-calming and standardization of speed limits.
- Have a second reading of an ordinance to change the speed limit on a section of James Road north of County Road 12.
- Have a second reading of an ordinance establishing the use of electronic vote-counting devices for the city’s Aug. 26 municipal elections.
- Consider a moratorium on certain types of residential projects in the city. The agenda didn’t specify which residential projects are on hold or how long the ban is to last.
- Discuss a liquor license for the Fairfield Inn and Suites Foley, located east of Texas Roadhouse and south of El Paso restaurant.
- Consider purchasing an equipment trailer for the Street Department from Trailer World Acquisition in Robertsdale for $5,100.
- Consider setting a public hearing to declare weeds at 9475 S. Hickory St. a public nuisance and order it be cleaned up.
- Discuss approving a proposal from Goodwyn Mills and Cawood for survey work on the South Alston Street proposal for $14,000. The extension will head south behind McDonald’s and O’Reilly’s Auto Parts to the Paris Hardware.
- Consider purchasing a ride-on blower from Robertsdale Power Equipment for $11,192 for the Street Department and putting the old blower up for auction.
- Discuss purchasing a 2025 Ford F-150 crew cab pickup for the Public Works maintenance shop for $45,990.
- Discuss an agreement with Baldwin County to help improve the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Hickory Street.
- Consider reappointing Sandy Russell to the Museum Archive Board.
- Discuss hiring WAS Design to write a manual to “assist in creating a design standard’s manual or pattern book that will guide the selection and procurement of urban design elements for Foley’s parks, street scapes, and outdoor public spaces” for $7,500.
- Discuss setting special-called council meetings to certify the municipal election results.
- Consider waiving fees for Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church for an event in Beulah Heights Park on May 17.
- Discuss waiving fees to the minimum for The Dream Center of Baldwin County to construct a new facility at 18464 Underwood Road.
- Consider approval to share the cost of a gravity sewer line installation on East Section Avenue in the area of the Local & Co. restaurant. The total cost of the project is $18,149.

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — Foley is continuing its efforts to highlight the city’s history in Navy aviation training with the addition of a second aircraft for a future museum exhibit. The newest addition is a Beechcraft T-34B Mentor, a trainer plane that once played a major role in preparing Navy pilots. This aircraft was a common sight over Foley and South Baldwin County during its years of active use. Pilots regularly flew the T-34B in the area while training.

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — A change in the definition of “family” in an amendment to the zoning ordinance will come before the Foley Planning Commission in its June meeting. The change will limit the number of unrelated people in one dwelling to three. Other changes will address group homes, communal living facilities, bed and breakfast businesses and several changes in care facilities for children, the elderly and the mentally challenged.

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — Police in Foley responded to a call early Monday morning, June 9, after an employee at Sweat Tire on County Road 12 reported damage to the property and vehicles. The call came in around 7:30 a.m. Officers arrived quickly and found multiple signs of criminal activity. Vehicles had been entered unlawfully, and some were burned. Equipment on-site had also been damaged.

Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — In tonight’s Orange Beach Committee of the Whole meeting, council members plan to discuss the resolution to purchase of a license plate recognition (LPR) system for the Police Department. The proposed $81,000 investment in a Flock Group, Inc. system highlights a shift toward smart policing and public safety enhancements in Orange Beach. These LPR cameras can automatically scan and log vehicle plates, aiding in crime prevention, stolen vehicle recovery, and identifying Amber Alerts.

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (OBA) — The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) will temporarily close part of Canal Road between Orange Beach and Gulf Shores to install steel bridge girders for the new Intracoastal Waterway Bridge. This work is part of a larger project to improve traffic flow and safety in the area. The temporary closure is needed to keep drivers and workers safe while the girders are placed. ALDOT says the project is moving forward as planned.

Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — Teens in Orange Beach are getting life skills along with their summer jobs this year. The city’s summer youth work program hosted a Lunch and Learn at the Orange Beach Community Center. During the event, students enjoyed pizza while learning about money management. The program is designed to mix fun activities with real-world education.
