Foley Invests in Downtown Parking with New Beautification Project
Landscaping, better drainage, and environmental upgrades are planned

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — Foley is taking steps to improve its downtown area by upgrading a central public parking lot. The city council recently accepted funding from Riviera Utilities and Energy Southeast Inc. to support these changes. The improvements are set to benefit downtown businesses by making parking more convenient and accessible for customers, employees, and visitors. Residents will soon see a more attractive and user-friendly space in the busy heart of the city.
The Foley City Council voted earlier this year to purchase the Dyas parking lot, which is located near the southwest corner of Alabama 59 and U.S. 98. The decision was made in April after the city had leased the lot for several years. City officials said owning the site will save money compared to renting and will ensure the lot remains available to the public.
Work on the parking lot will include landscaping along Alabama 59, featuring trees, flower beds, and shrubs. The city also plans to install landscaped islands within the lot, which will offer shade and help manage stormwater. These improvements are expected to both beautify the area and support the natural environment by reducing runoff.
Mayor Ralph Hellmich explained that the grant money from Energy Southeast has helped with many city projects in the past, including other downtown improvements and better lighting. According to the mayor, Riviera Utilities provides these grants on an annual basis. The city has used them for various local development projects.
City officials believe these changes will make the downtown area more welcoming and help local businesses thrive. Improved parking could bring more people downtown, benefitting shops and restaurants. With the planned enhancements and new ownership, Foley aims to create a more attractive and practical parking experience for everyone.
