Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has announced a new traffic control plan for the Baldwin Beach Express Bridge, effective at noon on Thursday, May 23. With the removal of toll collections, it is crucial for motorists to familiarize themselves with the changes in traffic patterns (see article graphic). This transition period will require patience and cooperation from all drivers to ensure a smooth flow of traffic; especially since it’s taking place on Memorial Weekend, one of the busiest weekends of the season.


One of the key elements to facilitate efficient traffic movement during is the use of the "Zipper Merge" technique. The zipper merge is a proven method for reducing congestion and maximizing the use of available road space. By utilizing both lanes until the designated merge point, and then alternating in a zipper-like fashion, vehicles can merge seamlessly into the single open lane. When all drivers adhere to this practice, it can reduce congestion by up to 40%. Drivers are urged to resist the temptation to merge early, as this can lead to unnecessary backups and delays. 


Note: ALDOT has already reduced the speed limits as you're approaching the booths. Headed south, it drops to 35mph pretty early and then it drops to 25mph before reaching the booths.

The Alabama Department of Transportation today announced a temporary traffic control plan for the Baldwin Beach Express Bridge, effective at noon on Thursday, May 23, 2024, to ensure a smooth transition for motorists after the end of toll collections.


Temporary Traffic Plan Details:

  • Date of Implementation: Starting at noon on Thursday, May 23, 2024.
  • Traffic Flow: Traffic control devices will be deployed to guide drivers through the existing plaza, maintaining one lane open in each direction.
  • Speed Limits: Motorists are advised to adhere to reduced speed limits in the vicinity of the plaza during this period.
  • Duration: The temporary traffic plan will be in place until ALDOT starts toll plaza demolition in the coming weeks.


Important Notices for Motorists:

Increased Traffic Awareness: With the onset of summer, traffic in the area is expected to be higher. Motorists should plan for potential congestion and exercise caution.

Funded by the Sea Tow Foundation, this station offers free life jackets for residents and visitors of Orange Beach. The life jackets are available in sizes from infant to Adult XL. The council voted Monday, June 3, to seek funding for more than one mile of sidewalk along Alabama 59. The Foley Revitalization and Beautification Advisory Board works on projects such as decorative plants, holiday decorations, plaques and other improvements around the city. ALDOT Begins Beach Express Toll Plaza Demolition Sunday, June 16

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) announced in a press release that the demolition of the Beach Express Bridge toll plaza will begin Sunday night, June 16. The project, undertaken by McInnis Construction LLC of Summerdale, Alabama, aims to improve traffic flow and safety in the area. The demolition will begin with temporary traffic shifts and the removal of toll booths, followed by further stages that include the removal of the overhead plaza canopy and necessary road patching. Motorists are advised to stay alert if traveling through this demolition zone and plan their travels accordingly
Gulf Shores Airport Terminal to Begin Construction by Fall

Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – The Gulf Shores City Council gave the airport authority permission to move forward with a grant application with the FAA to get $5 million to build a passenger terminal. The goal is to have the terminal completed by summer of 2025. “The airport was one of 144 airports nationwide to receive a grant for our airport terminal program,” City Administrator Jon Walker said. “The airport authority did receive $5 million that does require a match. As part of that the airport did solicit bids for this terminal project and at a meeting last week, they did open those bids and subsequently awarded the bid two days later to a Persons Services Corp.”

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The time to submit an application for the Orange Beach Fire Rescue’s Intern Firefighter training program comes to a close on June 16th. The training will start September 15, 2024. This 13-week course allows participants to earn Firefighter I and II certifications from the Alabama Fire College and gain practical firefighting experience.
