Roots in the Sand: The Origins of 1964

The story of the Flora-Bama began in 1962, when the State of Florida traded two miles of beachfront land to the State of Alabama in exchange for the construction of the Perdido Pass Bridge. Seizing the opportunity created by the new highway, Theodore "Ted" Tampary and his sons, Constantine "Connie" and Anthony "Bubba," set out to build a small bar and package store exactly on the new state line.

Construction was completed in 1964. However, the legend nearly ended before it began when a mysterious fire burned the building to the ground just one day before its planned Independence Day opening. Undeterred, the Tampary family rebuilt and officially opened their doors on August 1, 1964. In those early days, the Flora-Bama was one of the few businesses in the area, famously navigating the legal quirk of being located in "wet" Escambia County, Florida, while bordering "dry" Baldwin County, Alabama.

Evolution and the Spirit of Resilience

Over the decades, the lounge grew piecemeal to accommodate increasing crowds of fishermen, contractors, and tourists. Ownership transitions brought new energy: Joseph Gilchrist purchased the bar in 1978, making live music a daily staple, and was joined by partner Pat McClellan in 1986. Together, they launched iconic events like the Interstate Mullet Toss and the Frank Brown Songwriter's Festival. In later years, John McInnis and Cameron Price joined the team to ensure the tradition would continue for future generations.

The establishment's physical structure has been tested by nature's fury, most notably in 2004 when Hurricane Ivan nearly destroyed the location. Yet, following significant renovations, the Flora-Bama emerged stronger, maintaining its reputation as the "Country's Best Beach Bar".
