Serious Crash on Canal Road Wraps up Without Serious Injuries
Authorities say a medical issue likely caused the crash
Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — Last night, shortly before 7 PM, police and first responders received a call about a vehicle that had struck a light pole head-on and could not exit the vehicle. The accident happened on Canal Road near Swift Supply. Sirens blared, and emergency lights flashed as teams arrived at the distressing scene.
Residents in the area heard the commotion and realized it sounded more serious than typical activity. Longtime resident David Stark commented, “We hear these things all the time, but something about this one felt different.” As officials attempted to free the vehicle, Orange Beach Elementary crossing guards arrived to block all but one lane on South Canal near the accident site, including the side road leading to Swift Supply, the local shop where the incident occurred.
OBPD Deputy Chief Rodney Kirchharr confirmed that, fortunately, despite the appearance of a fatal accident, the driver survived. He stated, “There were no serious injuries at all,” a revelation that residents had been hoping for. Kirchharr noted that although the scene looked terrible, “the people were okay.”
The driver was treated on the scene for an unrelated medical condition, which authorities believe may have led to the accident. As the scene was cleared and traffic resumed, the first responders who had arrived amid the chaos left, and the only sound remaining was a collective sigh of relief, given what could have been a tragic incident for the community.
A heartfelt thank you to all first responders and OBES crossing guards for their timely actions and for helping ensure that medics and other teams could perform their duties effectively to protect and serve the community.
