Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – Last night, an Alabama beach became the scene of a disrupted nesting attempt by a sea turtle. The turtle, seeking to lay her eggs, was deterred by a crowd of onlookers and flashing lights. Unable to find a suitable nesting spot, the turtle returned to the water with her eggs.

Local wildlife experts stress the importance of leaving nesting sea turtles undisturbed. It is crucial to give these creatures plenty of space and to avoid using lights or flash photography. 

Using white lights on the beach can have a detrimental impact on nesting sea turtles. These lights can disorient and deter turtles from finding suitable nesting sites, disrupting their natural behavior and endangering their survival. Red filters, on the other hand, are less intrusive and can significantly reduce the negative impact on these vulnerable animals. By using red filters, beachgoers can help create a safer environment for sea turtles, ensuring they can nest without unnecessary obstacles and contribute to the preservation of the species.
