Orange Beach to discuss second $1M appropriation to school system

This makes $2 million for school operating expenses in 2022

Orange Beach, Alabama, is considering a $1 million appropriation to city schools on July 26.

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Orange Beach will consider a second $1 million appropriation to the new city school system at its joint regular/work session on July 26 at 5 p.m. at city hall.


In April, the council also gave the system $1 million for operating expenses and also spent $42 million to pay the county for the new high/middle school on Canal Road and a planned expansion started by the county at the elementary school. The city also paid more than $10 million for the construction of the Performing Arts Center at the new school.


Beginning in May of 2019, the city has donated more than $1 million to Mako Arts, Academics and Athletics Club which teachers and schools can apply for to meet specific needs.


Among those are:


Dec. 17, 2020: Set up a fund making $775,000 available to city schools to enhance classroom, arts and athletic activities. During 2020, the city spent about $270,000 in grants through MAAAC, President Ryan Long said.



Oct. 11, 2019: Giving almost $19,000 to the Makos Academics, Arts & Athletics Club (MAAAC).


May 7, 2019: OK’d a resolution giving $100,000 to the Orange Beach Education Foundation and $75,000 to MAAAC.


Additionally, the city paid about $330,000 in June of 2021 for three teaching units and teacher and coach salaries. The city has also funded several coaching positions at the high school in the football and softball programs in nonteaching positions.


During the regular session, the council will consider:


  • Passing a resolution awarding a contract to Mark D. Pavey to provide professional design services for the Orange Beach Medical Plaza in an amount not to exceed $222,609.


  • Voting for a resolution for the city to join the state and other local governments as participants in opioid settlements.


  • A contract with Coastal Fire Solutions for alarm monitoring at the Expect Excellence building at the recreation center for about $2,600.   


  • The purchase of two UTVs, one for the fire department and one for Coastal Resources at a cost of $21,296 each from Hall's Motorsports Eastern Shore.


  • A resolution to buy a station alerting system from Purvis Systems for the Fire Department for $141,129.   


  • A resolution awarding the bid for On-Call Carpentry and Drywall Services to Steward Construction Company per unit pricing for a maximum of three years.


  • A resolution declaring four police vehicle lightbars as surplus and unneeded and authorizing the donation of said property to the Coastal Alabama Community College. 


  • A first reading and public hearing on a change in the planned unit development for CoastAL to include a signage plan.


  • A first reading and public hearing pm a change in the PUD for Phoenix West II for a “public benefit amendment.” The published agenda gives no details on what the benefit entails.

  • A first reading and public hearing for Parks Edge PUD to add an accessory structure at 51 Parks Edge.


  • A first reading and public hearing on another change in the Parks Edge PUD to address a setback encroachment at 49 Parks Edge.


During the work session, the council will discuss:


  • A resolution for a contract with Thompson Engineering to perform construction engineering and inspection services for the widening of Canal Road from State Route 161 to Wilson Boulevard in an amount not to exceed $971,400.


  • A resolution for a contract with HAAS Alert for a Fire Department digital alerting solution.


  • An ordinance change to increase the allowable height of small cell facility poles in rights-of-way and to eliminate maximum allowable small cell equipment dimensions.


  • Setting a public hearing to amend The Wharf’s PUD to build a new Cobblestone House hotel near the site of the old mini golf course. The suggested date was Aug. 16.


  • Set a public hearing date to modify the Zeke’s Landing PUD to build a new sign. The suggested date was Aug. 16.


  • A public hearing and introduction of a change to the Parks Edge PUD for a change at 31 Parks Edge at the Aug. 2 council meeting.

Foley Preparing Work to Transfer Beach Express to State

As Alabama prepares to buy the bridge at the southern end of the Foley Beach Express, city officials are continuing plans to improve the route before it becomes a state highway. The Alabama Department of Transportation has announced plans to buy the bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway in Orange Beach. State officials said the toll over the bridge will be eliminated when the purchase is completed.
Preston Northan Gulf Shores Robbery Suspect

On Sunday afternoon, April 28th, the Gulf Shores Police responded to a robbery at the Arby's located at 1515 Gulf Shores Parkway. The incident occurred at 3:33 PM, when a man threatened an employee with what appeared to be a semi-automatic pistol. He demanded money and car keys.

Davidson was last seen around 5:12 AM near Bay John Condominiums at 4297 County Road 6.

Alabama Coaches and Athletes Bring Team Spirit to Orange Beach

On Saturday, April 27, 2024, the University of Alabama brought its "Tide on Tour" event to Orange Beach, delighting fans with the chance to meet and greet Crimson Tide coaches and student-athletes. The event, held at the Perdido Beach Resort, featured head football coach Kalen DeBoer, men's basketball coach Nate Oats, and several star players, including redshirt junior quarterback Jalen Milroe from Katy, Texas, graduate student defensive back Malachi Moore from Trussville, Alabama, and freshman wide receiver Ryan Williams from Saraland, Alabama, were among the athletes in attendance.
Alabama Saltwater Records Continue to Fall

As saltwater fishing for 2024 heads into the peak seasons, a look back at 2023 reveals another record-breaking year for those who fish Alabama’s coastal waters and the Gulf of Mexico. The catch that went viral with news agencies around the world picking up the story was the giant blue marlin caught by “Best Trait,” a 55-foot Viking sportfishing vessel owned by Scott Crump of Jasper. The marlin officially weighed 1,145.6 pounds, which is not only an Alabama but also a Gulf of Mexico record. The Best Trait marlin, which was 145 inches long, easily eclipsed the Alabama state record of 851.9 pounds caught in 2020 by Ginger Myers. The Gulf record was set in 2002 in Mississippi by Barry Carr at 1,054 pounds.
National Day of Prayer at Coastal Art Center in Orange Beach

On May 2nd, folks in the Orange Beach community and surrounding areas are invited to gather at the Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach to observe the National Day of Prayer. The annual event starts at noon and everyone is welcome. Local church leaders will guide prayers on the Center's shaded lawn.
