Orange Beach, Ala. –
(OBA) – Orange Beach will consider a second $1 million appropriation to the new city school system at its joint regular/work session on July 26 at 5 p.m. at city hall.
In April, the council also gave the system $1 million for operating expenses and also spent $42 million to pay the county for the new high/middle school on Canal Road and a planned expansion started by the county at the elementary school. The city also paid more than $10 million for the construction of the Performing Arts Center at the new school.
Beginning in May of 2019, the city has donated more than $1 million to Mako Arts, Academics and Athletics Club which teachers and schools can apply for to meet specific needs.
Among those are:
Dec. 17, 2020: Set up a fund making $775,000 available to city schools to enhance classroom, arts and athletic activities. During 2020, the city spent about $270,000 in grants through MAAAC, President Ryan Long said.
Oct. 11, 2019: Giving almost $19,000 to the Makos Academics, Arts & Athletics Club (MAAAC).
May 7, 2019: OK’d a resolution giving $100,000 to the Orange Beach Education Foundation and $75,000 to MAAAC.
Additionally, the city paid about $330,000 in June of 2021 for three teaching units and teacher and coach salaries. The city has also funded several coaching positions at the high school in the football and softball programs in nonteaching positions.
During the regular session, the council will consider:
- Passing a resolution awarding a contract to Mark D. Pavey to provide professional design services for the Orange Beach Medical Plaza in an amount not to exceed $222,609.
- Voting for a resolution for the city to join the state and other local governments as participants in opioid settlements.
- A contract with Coastal Fire Solutions for alarm monitoring at the Expect Excellence building at the recreation center for about $2,600.
- The purchase of two UTVs, one for the fire department and one for Coastal Resources at a cost of $21,296 each from Hall's Motorsports Eastern Shore.
- A resolution to buy a station alerting system from Purvis Systems for the Fire Department for $141,129.
- A resolution awarding the bid for On-Call Carpentry and Drywall Services to Steward Construction Company per unit pricing for a maximum of three years.
- A resolution declaring four police vehicle lightbars as surplus and unneeded and authorizing the donation of said property to the Coastal Alabama Community College.
- A first reading and public hearing on a change in the planned unit development for CoastAL to include a signage plan.
- A first reading and public hearing pm a change in the PUD for Phoenix West II for a “public benefit amendment.” The published agenda gives no details on what the benefit entails.
- A first reading and public hearing for Parks Edge PUD to add an accessory structure at 51 Parks Edge.
- A first reading and public hearing on another change in the Parks Edge PUD to address a setback encroachment at 49 Parks Edge.
During the work session, the council will discuss:
- A resolution for a contract with Thompson Engineering to perform construction engineering and inspection services for the widening of Canal Road from State Route 161 to Wilson Boulevard in an amount not to exceed $971,400.
- A resolution for a contract with HAAS Alert for a Fire Department digital alerting solution.
- An ordinance change to increase the allowable height of small cell facility poles in rights-of-way and to eliminate maximum allowable small cell equipment dimensions.
- Setting a public hearing to amend The Wharf’s PUD to build a new Cobblestone House hotel near the site of the old mini golf course. The suggested date was Aug. 16.
- Set a public hearing date to modify the Zeke’s Landing PUD to build a new sign. The suggested date was Aug. 16.
- A public hearing and introduction of a change to the Parks Edge PUD for a change at 31 Parks Edge at the Aug. 2 council meeting.
