Mobile, Ala. - (OBA) - A 69-year-old motor vessel captain was successfully medevaced by the U.S. Coast Guard while 218 miles offshore Alabama on Wednesday.
The Coast Guard Sector Mobile watchstanders received a call at 12:17 p.m. from the crew of the motor vessel Overseas Anacortes stating that their captain was experiencing heart attack-like symptoms. The duty flight surgeon was consulted and recommended that the captain receive higher-level medical care within 8 to 10 hours. A Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew was launched to assist.
The helicopter crew arrived on the scene and hoisted the captain, transferring him to University Medical Center New Orleans. The captain was last reported to be in stable condition. The successful medevac operation highlights the crucial role played by the Coast Guard in ensuring the safety of mariners in distress.
