Beach Safety Training in Full Swing

Orange Beach Lifeguards

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – They’re training, sharpening their skills, and reviewing crucial knowledge that could save lives.

According to The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, life guarding is one of the most physically strenuous and mentally demanding service jobs. And getting ready to protect lower Alabama’s beaches and swimming pools isn’t just about cleaning sunglasses and polishing whistles.

Responding swiftly and effectively to emergency situations takes rigorous preparation, including:

  • Physical fitness training: From swimming drills and running on sand, to weight training and other gym activities, lifeguards are getting into shape so they’ll have what it takes to swim long distances, perform rescues, and carry injured individuals.
  • Water rescue scenarios: This involves simulated rescue situations such as a swimmer caught in a rip current, administering CPR, or using rescue boards and jet skis for quicker assistance.
  • First aid and CPR recertification: Because staying up-to-date on life-saving techniques is so important, lifeguards undergo ongoing recertification in first aid and CPR to ensure they can confidently provide medical attention while waiting for further assistance.

But that’s not all it takes. Lifeguards must also meticulously review things they learned during their initial training, such as:

  • Oceanography and rip current identification: Understanding tides, currents, and how to identify potentially dangerous rip currents is essential for warning beachgoers and preventing emergencies.
  • Communication and crowd control: Lifeguards refresh their communication skills to effectively educate beachgoers on safety measures and maintain order during crowded periods.
  • Local regulations and flag systems: Each beach typically has specific regulations and flag systems indicating water conditions and safety levels. Reviewing these ensure lifeguards can accurately inform beachgoers and enforce safety rules effectively.

Are you ready for summer? They are. So whether you find yourself on the beaches at Flora-Bama and The Hangout, or prefer lounging by the condo pool, find a moment to thank a lifeguard for preparing both physically and mentally to keep us safe and help us enjoy the beauty of lower Alabama.
