City Council Unanimously Appoints Jeff Smith as Fire Chief

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The Orange Beach City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to appoint Jeff Smith as the new Fire Chief. The council chambers were filled to capacity with local firefighters who came to support Chief Smith.


Jeff Smith has been serving as the Interim Fire Chief since September 2023 following the retirement of Chief Mike Kimmerling. His career at Orange Beach Fire Rescue began on June 19, 1996. Over the years, he climbed the ranks from Lieutenant in 1999, to Battalion Chief in 2005, and later Deputy Chief in 2019. His promotion to Fire Chief came in 2024.


City Administrator Ford Handley expressed his honor in supporting Smith's new role. He highlighted Smith's nearly three decades of dedication to the fire department and the community. "Jeff has held every rank in the department and is admired by many for his commitment," Handley noted.


At the meeting, Mayor Tony Kennon and Chairman Pro-Tem Jeff Boyd also endorsed Smith. Kennon praised Smith's capabilities, while Boyd acknowledged his proven service and leadership.


Chief Smith expressed gratitude for the community's support and looked forward to continuing his service. The appointment was celebrated as a step forward for the fire department and the city.
