Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – The Gulf Shores Police Department's K9 Unit recently demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication at the US Police K9 Association Region 1 Field Trials held in Lakeland, Florida. Competing against top law enforcement teams from across the region, Gulf Shores’ K9 handlers and their canine partners showcased their abilities in patrol and detection, bringing home an impressive collection of awards.


Simply put, they crushed it.


K9 Sergeant Coker and his partner, K9 Flex, were the stars of the show, winning the prestigious Susie Rodgers Award for Top Dual Dog in both Patrol and Detector categories. Their outstanding performance earned them this coveted title and qualified them for the national competition, a significant achievement that highlights their dedication and expertise.


Excellence Across the Board

In addition to the top dual dog award, K9 Flex and Sergeant Coker secured multiple other accolades, including:


  • 1st Place in Patrol, 2-Man Team
  • 3rd Place Narcotic Detector Overall
  • 2nd Place Narcotic Detector, 2-Man Team
  • 3rd Place Narcotic Detector, Outdoors
  • 7th Place Overall Patrol Dog


Their exceptional teamwork and commitment to excellence have made them one of the most formidable K9 teams in the region.


Team Success and National Qualifications

K9 Officer Andrews, alongside his partner K9 Edo, also delivered a stellar performance. Their achievements included:


  • 1st Place in 2-Man Patrol Team
  • 1st Place in Indoor Narcotics Detection
  • 2nd Place in Narcotics Overall


This outstanding performance demonstrated their remarkable skills and earned them a spot in the upcoming national competition.


Other Notable Achievements

The Gulf Shores K9 Unit's success didn't stop there. K9 Command Sergeant Hancock and K9 Mara were equally impressive, securing:


  • 2nd Place in Narcotics Detection, 2-Man Team
  • 10th Place Overall in Narcotics Detection


Meanwhile, K9 Officer Shanks and K9 Bagheera showcased their expertise in explosives detection with the following honors:


  • 2nd Place Overall in Explosives Detection
  • 2nd Place in Indoor Explosives Detection
