Foley Council Reviews April Reports and Considers New Projects

Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – The Foley City Council will meet in a combined regular/work session on May 20 at 4 p.m. in council chambers at city hall. During the meeting, the council will:

 

Have a public hearing to declare weeds at 607 E. Orange Avenue a public nuisance and order its cleanup. The council will also consider a resolution to allow city workers to enter the property to clean up the nuisance weed.

 

Receive a report on the bills paid in April with a total paid out at $5.8 million.

 

Hear about taxes collected by the city in April including $3.7 million in sales tax or about $363,000 over the budget projections and $200,000 more than April of 2023. The city collected $237,175 in lodging taxes or $36,000 above budget projections and about $10,000 more than in April of 2023.

 

Receive a report from Community Development for April activity including issuing 103 single-family home building permits with a valuation of $34.6 million and 33 new single-family residential rentals with a valuation of $4.6 million. One commercial permit was issued with a valuation of $65,000.

 

Review a report from the police department on activity in April including processing 250 inmates through the jail, 16 arrests for shoplifting, 11 for simple assault, 10 for simple assault with domestic violence and 11 for theft. There were 31 arrests for controlled substances, 13 for drug paraphernalia and nine for misdemeanor possession of marijuana. Police were dispatched 1,985 times in April.

 

Receive a report from the fire department showing crews were called out 70 times to assist invalids, 34 times for medical assists, 20 traffic accidents without injuries, 18 traffic accidents with injuries and 11 times for aircraft standby. Crews were called out and canceled en route 26 times and responded to 252 total calls.

 

Hear a request from Greystone Village Homeowners Association for the city to take over maintenance and infrastructure with the rights of way on the development’s streets. The council will consider an ordinance to take over the streets.

 

Consider a liquor license for the Dollar General located at 2863 S. McKenzie St.

 

Consider a liquor license for the CEFCO store located at 1216 N. McKenzie St.

 

Discuss buying a truck for $65,000 for the Municipal Complex to be used by maintenance crews.

 

Consider approving $175,000 for a streetscape plan to revitalize historic downtown.

 

Hear a report on bids awarded during April including $10.6 million to Crucible Construction for buildings at the new Public Works complex, $32,464 to Del-Con for installing utilities for the Mel Roberts Park bathroom/concessions building, $42,661 for Mathis Park playground equipment and a safety service and $35,782 to Amerson Roofing for dugouts at Mel Roberts Park.

 

Consider approving the purchase of two network firewalls.

 

Discuss buying a laser line painter for the multi-use fields among three bids from Sherwin Williams for $17,100, U.S. Specialty Coatings for $17, 399 and Pioneer Athletics for $18,298.

 

Consider paying Goodwyn Mills & Caywood to conduct a topographic and tree survey and a master plan for Mills Community Park for $25,000.

 

Discuss issuing a revenue bond by the Foley Redevelopment Authority to benefit Goodwill Industries of the Gulf Coast. No further details accompanied the agenda.

 

Consider paying Martin Marine between $53,000- and $64,000 to restore the bulkhead area near the fishing pier at Wolf Creek Park, adding a 58-foot pocket beach and making repairs to the canoe launch.

 

Consider allowing staff to apply for an FY 2024 Impact 100 grant.

 

Discuss approving $150,000 for the Nature Parks Department to build an event pavilion at Graham Creek Nature Preserve south of the facility’s Interpretive Center.

 

Consider accepting a first responder hurricane safe room. The council will also consider seeking requests for qualifications to architectural firms to design the safe room.

 

Discuss setting a public hearing date on nuisance weeds at 301 Woodbridge Court and discuss cleaning it up.

Two Vehicle Wreck Near Foley Claims Orange Beach Woman’s Life

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALES) is reporting that an Orange Beach woman died after a two-vehicle crash late Wednesday morning near Foley. The accident happened on South Hickory Street near Baldwin County 20. The ALEA said the crash involved a Chevrolet pickup and a Jeep SUV. Troopers are still investigating the cause of the crash.
