Foley Municipal Airport Renamed Holk Field to Honor Former Mayor
First pilot to land at Foley Airfield now has the airport named for him

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — Foley officials have renamed the Foley Municipal Airport to Holk Field in honor of former Mayor Arthur Holk. The change recognizes a family whose service to the city spans generations. The decision was made through a resolution passed by the Foley City Council. Family members of the late mayor attended the meeting where the vote was taken.
The resolution was approved at a recent Foley City Council meeting, where State Representative Frances Holk Jones was present to witness the decision. She said she was deeply honored that the city chose to rename the airport. The new name, Holk Field, formally replaces the previous Foley Municipal Airport designation following the council’s vote.
The Holk family has a long history of public service in Foley. Representative Holk Jones’ father, Arthur Holk, served as mayor, and her grandfather also held the same office. She said their love for the community shaped every part of their lives and guided their work on behalf of Foley’s residents.
The honor carries extra meaning for the family because of Arthur Holk’s personal connection to the airport. According to Holk Jones, her father was the very first person to land at the airfield that is now called Holk Field. Aviation was one of his greatest passions, and the airport played a major role in his life.
That passion for flying extended to the next generation. Holk Jones said that she and her brother, Andy, both took flying lessons at the Foley airport. Each of them later completed solo flights there, strengthening the family’s bond to the airfield. Those memories made the renaming especially emotional for them.
Seeing the airport bear the Holk name is a moment the family said they will never forget. Holk Jones expressed deep gratitude to the mayor, the Foley City Council and the City of Foley for the recognition. She said the new name honors not only her father but also the generations of Holks who have proudly served the community.
