Park improvements tied to upcoming Aquatics Center construction

Max Griffin Park

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — The city of Foley is moving forward with a new round of improvements at Max Griffin Park, including a new indoor Aquatics Center. The Foley City Council recently approved plans to upgrade lighting at the softball fields and remove overhead power lines. The Aquatics Center will also include exterior restrooms so park visitors can use the facilities without entering the building.

On October 19, 2026, the city announced plans that include $204,000 in available funding to improve softball field lighting and make other park improvements. As part of the project, the city will replace the park's overhead power lines with an underground electrical system.

Jeff Lee, Foley Parks and Recreation Director, explained the city's approach to the available funds. "We would like to use this available funding and put LED lighting on the softball field that is going to remain in Max Griffin Park," Lee told council members.

The city and Riviera Utilities will also work together to upgrade the park's electrical service and transformers. These upgrades are needed to support both the Aquatics Center and the planned field lighting systems.

The new indoor Aquatics Center will replace Foley's municipal pool, which opened at Max Griffin Park in 1953. The new facility will allow swimming and other activities year-round, not just during the warm months.

City officials hope to issue construction bids for the Aquatics Center project later in 2026. Once the city selects a contractor and work begins, the project is expected to take about 18 months to complete.

The current outdoor pool will remain open to the public until the Aquatics Center is completed. After the new center opens, the outdoor pool area will be converted into a different amenity for park visitors.
