Fifth annual Forward City Con coming to Foley on April 1

Event includes video gaming, anime, panel discussions

Forward City Con returning to Foley, Alabama, on April 1.

Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – The fifth annual Forward City Con is coming to the Foley Civic Center on Saturday, April 1, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Portions of the show will also be in the Foley Public Library next door and council chambers in the same building as the civic center.


Forward City Con is a comic, anime and gaming convention and the day will include a Cosplay competition, panel discussions, showing of anime, door prizes, video gaming area – manned by Action Game & Movie, a tabletop gaming area, a special play, a variety of demos, photo opportunities, and the Greek Gals Yummies food truck as well as food delivery by the Wacked Out Weiner.


Several local vendors such as Brew Productions and Covert Comics along with artists like Nice as Mice and Flopbox will also be on hand.


Anime viewing will be going on next door to the Civic Center at the Foley Public Library in the upstairs meeting room. Panel discussions will be hosted in the Foley Council Chambers located in the same building where the Civic Center is housed. 


Door prize awards as well as participant games and prize tosses will be conducted from the stage at the Civic Center. Play performance by Commedia del Arte, a LARPing demo and an SCA demo will also be on the stage. Special guest Shane Adams from Knights of Valour will be there for autographs and photos.


The Cosplay competition will be held at the Civic Center and is open to 60 contestants. This competition offers two categories – “self-made” and “purchased.” 


Online entry for the Cosplay competition prior to April 1 is encouraged via the con’s new website – https://www.forwardcitycon.com/. Pre-registration for the Cosplay Contest can also be done at the convention from 9 a.m.-noon. Cosplay Contest rules can be acquired via the con’s website as well.

LifeSouth Blood Drive Comes to Orange Beach City Hall

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The city of Orange Beach is hosting a blood drive in partnership with LifeSouth Community Blood Centers. Scheduled for Thursday, May 16, 2024, this vital community event will take place at the Orange Beach City Hall, located at 4099 Orange Beach Blvd. The LifeSouth Bloodmobile will be on site from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to facilitate the donations.
Birdhouse Design Contest Encourages Creativity in New Project

Orange Beach Parks and Recreation has announced a fun and artsy contest where participants can showcase their skills by designing decorative birdhouses.

Superintendent Matt Akin announced to the City Council that the celebration would take place on Wednesday the 15th at LuLu's in Gulf Shores. The festivities will begin at 6 PM.
Brookman's Smokehouse To Go is now the Fire Smoked Fish Company

Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – Brookman's Smokehouse To Go, a popular local eatery known for its smoked fish dishes, has announced a rebranding initiative. The restaurant will now operate under the name "FIRE SMOKED FISH COMPANY" to better represent its core offerings and facilitate future growth.

Perdido Key, Fla. – (OBA) – The Gulfarium CARE Center will be releasing several rehabilitated sea turtles back into the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday, May 15th, at Perdido Key Public Beach Access #4. The event will begin at 11am and is expected to last about 10–15 minutes, weather permitting. In the case of inclement weather, such as storms or lightning, the release will be rescheduled.

The Orange Beach High School softball team had a scare involving one of its star players during state tournament play in Oxford on May 13. A bad hop caught shortstop Daigle Wilson in the face and broke her nose and is causing swelling. Wilson was on the field for about 30–45 minutes and was loaded on a board as a precaution since she suffered a head injury.
Foley Fire Department Ups Capacity with New Truck

Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – Foley’s newest fire truck is now in service to meet the growing demand for services in the city. The Foley Fire Department dedicated the new pumper Wednesday, May 8, with a ceremony at the city’s main fire station.

The Foley Planning Commission will meet in a regular session on May 15 in council chambers at city hall. During the meeting, the commission will discuss: A request to extend the plan of the Knoll Subdivision located in the planning jurisdiction at the northwest corner of County Road 16 and County Road 65. The parcel is 38.87 acres and is currently vacant and zoned rural residential. Staff will recommend approval of the request.
Orange Beach Billfish Classic Tournament Rescheduled Due to Weather

The Orange Beach Billfish Classic, originally slated to begin this weekend, has been rescheduled due to an unfavorable weather forecast. The annual fishing tournament will now see boats departing on Monday, May 20th at noon, with activities concluding on Wednesday, May 22nd.
