Construction Planned on Miflin Road in Foley

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — Foley residents and business owners may soon notice some significant changes along Miflin Road, a key stretch for local commerce and daily travel. City officials are planning improvements that aim to smooth traffic, highlight safety, and give the area a fresh look. The project is designed to make traveling on Miflin Road easier and safer, responding to concerns from drivers and business owners alike. The changes will also add a touch of green space and new lighting, transforming the center median.

Construction crews are expected to start work between Alabama 59 and Juniper Street in the coming weeks, with completion targeted before the tourist season kicks off next year. The project should take about three to four months once it's underway, and while the work may mean a few lane closures, the street will stay open for through traffic.

One feature of the planned upgrades is a new grass median. The old asphalt lane will be replaced with landscaping and concrete curbs, providing a more attractive—and safer—drive for everyone passing through. A mid-block U-turn will be installed within 1,000 feet of Alabama 59, making it easier for vehicles to cross without risking traffic jams or fender benders.

Assistant City Engineer Taylor Davis said that planning is finished and safety was the top priority when reviewing accident reports for the area. “There are a lot of conflicting points and a lot of traffic when you cross. This cleans it up,” Davis said. The city spent time meeting with local business operators to make sure their needs and suggestions were part of the review.

Mayor Ralph Hellmich explained that all the concerns from businesses connected to Miflin Road were carefully considered. That means smoother turn lanes and a layout that suits everyone, with little expected pushback from merchants. The city aims to do the construction during quieter months to avoid heavy tourist traffic and keep disruptions to a minimum.

Foley leaders say the improvements reflect local voices and highlight the kind of upgrades that keep the city growing and lively. Whether it's a daily commute, a quick trip for shopping, or weekend visitors exploring Foley, Miflin Road is getting set for a safer, more inviting journey.
