Christmas festivities bring holiday magic to the Alabama Gulf Coast

The Gulf Coast gears up for a festive couple of weeks

Christmas Tree at the Wharf

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Let the jolly tidings flow while there’s less than two weeks until Christmas, there are still a lot of things to do on the Alabama Gulf Coast this holiday season where the family can stay busy right up until the potluck line opens at 1 p.m. at the Flora-Bama Lounge and Oyster Bar on Christmas Day.

 

GULF SHORES

Cookie Decorating with Santa’s Elves and Storytime

 

Join the elves for some cookie time and storytime following the decorating at 10:30 a.m. at the Gulf Shores Library. Storytime will return on Dec. 14 also at 10:30 a.m. It’s free but you can sign up by calling the library at 251-968-1176. Storytime returns on Dec. 21 at 10:30 a.m. and will include making Christmas ornaments.

 

Movies at Meyer Park

 

Get your Elf on Dec. 14 at 6 p.m. with the December feature being “Elf” as part of the monthly movie series. Bring chairs and blankets and snacks and drinks to get into the holiday spirit. Meyer Park is located at East 22nd Avenue and East Third Street.

 

Billy Claus at LuLu’s

 

Santa’s warm-weather loving brother Billy will make his annual stop at LuLu’s on Dec. 15, arriving at 3 p.m. to bolster himself for the trip up north with some of LuLu’s famous gumbo. He’ll be taking kids’ Christmas wishes to his brother. The LuLuBelles will join him and it will be followed by a showing of the “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” at 5 p.m.

 

 

Breakfast with Santa

 

On Dec. 16, for $5 you can have a breakfast of pancakes, sausage, bacon and eggs with the jolly old elf himself, Santa Claus. Complimentary photos with Santa will also be available. Activities start at 8 a.m. at the Erie Meyer Civic Center.

 

ORANGE BEACH

Ice Skating at The Wharf

 

Try your luck on the ice with the rink open through Jan. 15 with the rink open 4-10 p.m. on weekdays, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays noon-8 p.m. It will be closed on Christmas, will open noon-4 p.m. on Christmas Eve and noon-midnight on New Year’s Eve.


OWA

Breakfast with Santa

 

The resort will offer a chance to feast with Santa several times, including Sunday Dec. 17 and every day Dec. 19-22 all at 9 a.m. It will include eggs, bacon, sausage as well as Christmas crafts with your $25.99 ticket available online here. Toys for Tots collection sites will be available at the resort.

 

The North Pole Experience

 

This resort event will also be Saturday and Sunday Dec. 17 and Dec. 18-23 the week of Christmas. Santa will be available for photos with various packages offered. 

 

Sugarplum Festival

 

This event will be on Dec. 16-17 from noon-6 p.m. and includes cookie decorating, a gumdrop scavenger hunt, vendors throughout downtown OWA and live music including the Sugarplum Fairy Dancers. 

 

Elf-Venture

 

Four lovable elves will take on a thrilling adventure in a race to save Christmas from an unexpected villain at the OWA Theater. Shows will be on Dec. 16 and Dec. 22 at 6 p.m. and Dec. 17 and Dec. 23 at 3 p.m. Get tickets here.

Graham Creek Christmas Trail


The Christmas will be open on Dec. 15-17 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tickets at the gate are $5 and those 2 and under are free. The Snow Princess will make an appearance on Dec. 17 from 6:30-7:30 p.m., Santa will be on hand from 6-8 p.m. each night and a food truck will be available.

Hangout Music Fest 2024

At the regularly scheduled Gulf Shores City Council meeting, key topics concerning the Hangout Music Festival were discussed. A number of city officials, including City Manager Grant Brown, Fire Chief Mark Sealy, Police Chief Edward Delmore, and Mayor Robert Craft, approached the podium to deliver reports in their respective areas of expertise.

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – On Saturday, June 8, 2024, Alabamians and out-of-state visitors alike will have the opportunity to fish for free in most public waters including both freshwater and saltwater. Free Fishing Day allows residents and non-residents to enjoy the outstanding fishing Alabama has to offer without purchasing a fishing license. The event is part of National Fishing and Boating Week, which runs June 1-9.

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The Orange Beach City Council will convene for a joint regular/work session on May 21 at 4 p.m. in the council chambers at city hall. The agenda for the regular session includes a variety of items such as a report on city expenditures totaling $2.5 million, a presentation by Ally Mavar, the Orange Beach contestant in the Miss Alabama Volunteer Scholarship Pageant, and the consideration of proclamations for National Cities, Towns and Villages Month and Building Safety Month.
East Verbena Avenue Improvements Will Not Shut Down Area Parking

Work on improvements on East Verbena Avenue will begin soon, but businesses along the road will remain open and parking will be available. The project is planned to improve lighting, parking and drainage as well as work on the roadway. The East Verbena Improvement Project includes reshaping existing parking stalls and making improvements to the concrete, landscaping and right of way near the eastern side of Alabama 59.

Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – A master agreement with Volkert for engineering and design services for several city projects is still open, but the company wishes to close some of those task orders related to those projects. The total original contract to Volkert for the work was $3.7 million, but cost overruns have raised it to $5 million.
Foley Alabama Welcome Sign

The Foley City Council will meet in a combined regular/work session on May 20 at 4 p.m. in council chambers at city hall. During the meeting, the council will: Have a public hearing to declare weeds at 607 E. Orange Avenue a public nuisance and order its cleanup. The council will also consider a resolution to allow city workers to enter the property to clean up the nuisance weed.

East Canal Road in Orange Beach Gets  A New Look

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The East Canal Road widening project in Orange Beach has been completed. The project, stretching from Highway 161 to Wilson Boulevard, expanded much of the 1.4-mile section of the road to three lanes. This includes a middle turn lane east of the roundabout. The roundabout was added near the public library, along with a 10-foot multi-use path on the north side of the road​​.

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The 28th annual Orange Beach Billfish Classic, the first big game tournament of the season on the Gulf Coast, rescheduled its fishing days due to unfavorable weather conditions originally planned for this week. Tournament organizers announced last Wednesday that the tournament will now take place starting tomorrow, Monday, May 20th and run through Wednesday, May 22nd. Fishing hours will be continuous beginning at noon on the 20th, with all boats required to clear the Perdido Bridge or Sailboat Bay in Bon Secour by 7 p.m. on the 22nd to qualify for the weigh-in.
