Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – During an April 2 work session, the Orange Beach City Council will discuss a resolution regarding children’s books at the city’s library.

“The City Council has been made aware through public comment, as well as national and state news, that concerns have arisen regarding the age appropriateness of some content in children’s materials in the library and the accessibility to these materials by young children,” the proposed resolution states. “The policy provides that books and media containing material not appropriate for all audiences will be provided to children only with the consent of a parent and reiterates that pornographic materials are not available at the Orange Beach Public Library.”

The resolution also states this will bring the Orange Beach library “in line with new standards that are currently being implemented and developed across the state.”

Also, library-related, the council will consider hiring McCollough Architecture for design services for a new roof for $18,500. Next door at the Senior Center, the council will also consider hiring McCollough for $11,700 for design services for roof replacement and an addition to the building. These will be discussed at the work session and voted on in an upcoming regular session.

The council will meet April 2 at 5 p.m. in council chambers at city hall.

During the regular session, the council will discuss:

• Declaring April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month in Orange Beach.
• An agreement with McLean Motor Sports Productions for the spring Bama Coast Cruisin’ on April 25-27.
• A resolution and amendment to the employee's pay plan and job listing to accommodate new positions approved in the 2024 budget.
• Hiring McCollough Architecture to provide designs for new gateway signs for $3,800.
• Purchasing emergency equipment for police vehicles from Dana Safety Supply for $68,378. The council will also consider buying K-9 vehicle equipment for the police department also from Dana Safety Supply for $30,557.
• Buying two Toyota Tacoma pickups for the police department for $106,054.
• Awarding a bid for a rotary screw blower package from Jim House and Associates for $185,714.
• A change order in the Beaver Creek sidewalk repairs project to reduce the slope of driveway tie-ins for $11,370.

During the work session, the council will discuss:

• Approval of 2022 audited financials.
• Awarding the bid for softball field light installation. Bids will be opened on April 11.
• Renewing a subscription with Granicus for address identification and rental activity monitoring for $99,640 for one year.
• Setting a public hearing for an ordinance change involving water recreational rentals. The suggested date is May 7.
• Setting a public hearing for an ordinance amendment on highway frontage requirements on the north side of State Route 180 from Oak Street to William Silvers Parkway. The suggested date is May 7.
• Rescheduling a public hearing for an ordinance amendment regarding charter boat home occupations from April 16 to May 7.
• Several reminders of public hearings on ordinances to establish a planned unit development for Admiral Self Storage, adding docks at Cottages at Old Bay on Terry Cove, adding piers and a storage building at Zeke’s Landing Marina and Young’s Hideaway glamping sites on city property at the Rosemary Dunes trailhead. All are set for April 16.
