Will Foley Go Solar? City Council to Discuss 619-Acre Solar Farm Plan
Foley, Ala. - (OBA) - In an upcoming session, the Foley City Council will be evaluating a plan to construct a solar farm near Baldwin County 65. The meeting, which is set to commence at 4 p.m. on Monday, June 5 at City Hall, will involve a discussion of this proposal among other items.
The Council is slated to conduct a public hearing on a request to zone a 619-acre site as a planned industrial district. The approval of the PID designation would pave the way for the proposed land to be transformed into a solar farm, with solar panels spread across approximately 544 acres.
The recommendation for the proposal came from the Foley Planning Commission, which voted in favor of the project in May. The project blueprint includes a 250-foot buffer zone between the solar panels and the adjacent property. To further minimize visual impact, the design includes fences, trees, and additional landscaping to obscure the view.
Following the public hearing, the Council is expected to cast a vote on the proposal.

As part of the agreement for the Alabama Department of Transportation to buy the Foley Beach Express toll bridge, Foley is turning over maintenance of its portion to the state.
Since the expressway and toll bridge were built, Foley was responsible for maintaining the roadway from its beginning at State Route 59 to its intersection with County Road 12. As part of the purchase agreement, this portion will be taken over for maintenance by the state as part of an extended State Route 161.
A lot of changes are in the works in the Gulf Pines neighborhood in the area framed by the 90-degree turn at Tacky Jacks including a detour around the turn through the neighborhood and streetscapes planned to improve the streets with landscaping, benches and other amenities.
The latest could be the inclusion of the streets there in the golf cart ordinance for the city. Adding those streets will be discussed at the May 6 council work session at 4 p.m. in council chambers at city hall.

Lamar Pendergrass, the South Region Operations Supervisor for the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ (ADCNR) State Parks Division, said missing pilings and decking components have been replaced all the way to the octagon, which will allow construction workers much easier access to the entire 1,544-foot pier.
A tragic traffic incident claimed the life of a driver in Gulf Shores early this morning. The accident occurred around 1:24 AM near Tacky Jacks, at the intersection of East Canal Drive and East Second Street. Authorities reported that the vehicle was heading west on East Canal Drive when it breached the guard rail and plunged into the water below. The driver was declared deceased at the scene.
