Perdido Pass fishing park repair bid to be announced

The Perdido Pass Seawall Park is a popular spot in Orange Beach, Alabama.

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The Orange Beach City Council will consider a $695,597 bid to make repairs to the seawall park beneath and beside the Perdido Pass bridge.


The project will make repairs to damage from Hurricane Sally and also finish a planned phase three expansion of the area.


During the regular session, the council will discuss:


  • Agreeing to receive a permit from the Alabama Department of Transportation for the to allow the city to make repairs on the Perdido Pass Seawall Park. In this permit the state asks the city to take on the maintenance of the asphalt parking under the bridge.


  • Authorizing a third amendment to a grant agreement with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources for the Restore Act-funded improvements underway on Canal Road east of State Route 161. The city is seeking another $5.9 million according to the agenda.


  • A resolution awarding the annual bid for on-call electrical services to A&B Electric Company of Mobile for a maximum of three years.


  • Purchasing an aerator with attachments for the Landscape Department for $19,513.


  • Authorizing a business associate agreement Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama for the city employee health plan.


  • Requesting the legislative annexation of Russian Road properties into the city limits. The city already owns the property it is seeking to annex and uses it for a shooting range and a construction and debris laydown yard.


  • Signing a contract with McCollough Architecture for professional services for a roof replacement and the addition of storage space for $17,500.


  • Conduct a public hearing and first reading of an ordinance amendment for Jones Duplexes which will contain three single family houses and two duplexes directly east of Turquoise Place. The owner is Rodney Jones who also owns Hudson Marina with his wife Laurie.


  • Conduct a public hearing and first reading for a change in the zoning ordinance for JPEM Duplex on the beach at 29110 Perdido Beach Boulevard.


  • Have a public hearing and first reading for a zoning ordinance to allow a conditional use permit for 5.2 acres on the north side of Canal Road between Bayside Mobile Home Park on the west and Sunset Villas to the east.


During the work session, the council will discuss:


  • Nominating someone from the city to the county Board of Equalization, as required by state law.


  • Authorizing a contract with 5020 Engineering Resource Group for civil engineering and other services for the city. Fees for work completed and reimbursable expenses will be invoiced to the city monthly.


  • Authorizing a contract with 5020 Engineering Resource Group for new parking for $99,000.


  • Authorizing a contract between the University of Alabama and Coastal Resources Director Phillip West for consultation on a university plan on how to create new outdoor trails.


  • Donating a 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe four-wheel-drive SUV to the city of Repton.


  • The purchase of a recorder server for the police department dispatch from Applied Digital Solutions for $73,725.


  • Buying body armor rifle plates for the police department for $35,850.


  • Authorizing the purchase of car cameras for the police department at a cost $656,042.


  • An ordinance amendment to allow city department heads to set certain fees.


  • An ordinance amendment to ensure Americans with Disabilities Act compliance on construction of condos in the city.


  • An ordinance amendment to address “disorderly and prohibited conduct on balconies.” Gulf Shores is considering a similar amendment to its ordinance at a work session March 20.


  • Setting a public hearing for a requested amendment in The Wharf’s planned unit development to add 34,000 square feet of leasable space west of Main Street and north of Canal Road. The suggested date was April 18.


  • Setting public hearings for pool setback and a front porch addition in the Village of Tannin.

The reconstruction of the Gulf State Park Pier reached a milestone recently when the walkway to the octagon on the end was partially completed. Lamar Pendergrass, the South Region Operations Supervisor for the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ (ADCNR) State Parks Division, said missing pilings and decking components have been replaced all the way to the octagon, which will allow construction workers much easier access to the entire 1,544-foot pier.
Vehicle Plunges into Water in Fatal Gulf Shores Crash

A tragic traffic incident claimed the life of a driver in Gulf Shores early this morning. The accident occurred around 1:24 AM near Tacky Jacks, at the intersection of East Canal Drive and East Second Street. Authorities reported that the vehicle was heading west on East Canal Drive when it breached the guard rail and plunged into the water below. The driver was declared deceased at the scene.
Foley Dedicates Memorial Plaque to City Founder

Sea Turtle Nesting Season

The support of Alabama coastal residents is needed to raise awareness and educate our visitors to Keep Light’s Out for turtles. The sea turtle nesting season is May through October. Nesting occurs on the beaches from Fort Morgan to Orange Beach and the Florida Panhandle.

Recreational Red Grouper Fishing in Gulf of Mexico Pauses in July

Starting from July 1, 2024, at 12:01 am local time, recreational fishing for red grouper in the federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico will be prohibited. This closure, extending through the end of the year, is enforced by NOAA Fisheries due to the expected meeting of the annual catch target of 1,840,000 pounds gutted weight by June 30, 2024.
