Orange Beach to discuss improvements to Powerline Road

Council will meet in joint regular-work session Sept. 6
Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The Orange Beach city council will meet on Sept. 6 at 5 p.m. in a joint regular-work session in council chambers at city Hall.
The biggest discussion item on the work session agenda is a resolution authorizing a contract with Sawgrass Consulting to provide civil engineering, land surveying, geotechnical and environmental services for the design of Powerline Road, Treatment Plant Road, and multi-purpose sports fields. Powerline Road will service the under-construction Fire Station No. 3 with a total project cost of about $431,400.
During the regular session, the council will also discuss:
- A resolution awarding the bid for 2022 Roadway Resurfacing to Arrington Curb and Excavation in an amount not to exceed $344,443.
- A resolution authorizing a contract with Brandy Reeves for tennis instruction services.
- A resolution authorizing the execution of a memorandum of understanding with the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences (ADFS) for evidential breath testing equipment.
- A resolution to purchase of a Robotic Field Painter from from Turf Tank, for the Public Works Department in the amount of $56,500.
- A resolution for a license agreement with The Wharf for the Second Annual Orange Beach Freedom Fest on Sept. 30-Oct. 2.
- A public hearing and introduction of an ordinance to amend the Beach Village planned unit development to allow for replotting one lot and adding an employee residence in the common areas of Phase 2.
During the work session, the council will discuss:
- The upcoming fall beach renourishment program.
- A resolution authorizing execution of a reciprocal agreement to exchange building permit information with the Baldwin County Revenue Commissioner's Office.
- Resolutions authorizing contracts with Perry Guy Music and Tami Curtis Studios to provide artwork and poetry for a shorebird educational project for the Coastal Resources Department.
- A resolution authorizing a contract with Wetland Sciences for ecological services for Coastal Resources.
- A resolution authorizing a contract with Wetland Sciences to develop the Orange Beach component of the Orange Beach Alabama Beach Mouse Habitat Conservation Plan in an amount not to exceed $59,800.
- A resolution declaring certain personal property owned by the City of Orange Beach as surplus and unneeded and authorizing the Mayor and City Clerk to dispose of such property. Included in the lot are five vehicles, two wave runners and two ATVs.
- A resolution reappointing Mike Contorno and Tim Harry to the Board of Adjustment.
- A resolution authorizing a contract with J. F. Morris Performance for theater performance direction for “The Little Mermaid.”
- Setting public hearing dates for modification of The Wharf’s planned unit development to add a Culver’s restaurant, a conditional use permit to allow a duplex on the beach east of the Ono Island bridge and the Bel Air Towers to add 152 units west of the Fairfield Inn. Oct. 4 was the suggested date for all three hearings.

The reconstruction of the Gulf State Park Pier reached a milestone recently when the walkway to the octagon on the end was partially completed.
Lamar Pendergrass, the South Region Operations Supervisor for the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ (ADCNR) State Parks Division, said missing pilings and decking components have been replaced all the way to the octagon, which will allow construction workers much easier access to the entire 1,544-foot pier.
A tragic traffic incident claimed the life of a driver in Gulf Shores early this morning. The accident occurred around 1:24 AM near Tacky Jacks, at the intersection of East Canal Drive and East Second Street. Authorities reported that the vehicle was heading west on East Canal Drive when it breached the guard rail and plunged into the water below. The driver was declared deceased at the scene.
Almost a century after the death of the community’s founder, the vision of John Foley is still guiding the growing city. The city of Foley dedicated a plaque recognizing John Foley set into the renovated fountain in the park named for the community founder.
The support of Alabama coastal residents is needed to raise awareness and educate our visitors to Keep Light’s Out for turtles. The sea turtle nesting season is May through October. Nesting occurs on the beaches from Fort Morgan to Orange Beach and the Florida Panhandle.

Starting from July 1, 2024, at 12:01 am local time, recreational fishing for red grouper in the federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico will be prohibited. This closure, extending through the end of the year, is enforced by NOAA Fisheries due to the expected meeting of the annual catch target of 1,840,000 pounds gutted weight by June 30, 2024.
