New Roundabout Opens On SR-161 North In Gulf Shores

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (OBA) —  A new roundabout on SR-161 North in Gulf Shores is now open to traffic. The roundabout sits south of Gateway Boulevard, also known as County Road 8, and gives drivers traveling through the area more ways to get where they are going. The opening marks a major step in a broader effort to improve traffic flow along the SR-161 corridor.

The North Roundabout opened on October 20th and is the final major component of the SR-161 improvement project. The project also included the new SR-161 South Bridge (the Waterway Bridge) and the SR-161 North Bridge near The Wharf.

The new roundabout offers drivers several travel options in the area. Southbound SR-161 traffic can now access Roscoe Road and reach County Road 4. Northbound motorists can more easily access southbound SR-161 toward SR-180 and Alabama's beaches.

The roundabout also provides another connection between SR-161 and the local road network. It is designed to improve traffic flow and give drivers more options when traveling through the Gulf Shores area.

The full set of SR-161 improvements is designed to add capacity, improve traffic flow, and provide residents and visitors with more travel options along Alabama's Gulf Coast. Officials say the upgrades will help manage growing traffic demand.
