Gulf Shores close to awarding $19.2M for Waterway East work

Road will connect to the proposed new ALDOT bridge over ICW

Gulf Shores, Alabama, is close to awarding a $19.2M bid for work on Waterway East.

Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – Gulf Shores is poised to award the bid for improvements along Waterway East Boulevard from State Route 59 to the proposed new bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway to Asphalt Services for $19.2 million.


The council will discuss the bid at an Oct. 3 in a work session and other items it will vote on at the Oct. 10 regular session.


Gulf Shores will use a $21.7 million RESTORE grant as well as $8.6 million from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Coastal Resort Properties which, owns waterfront property along the roadway, will provide an additional $1.2 million for design and inspection costs related to the project. The money from ADCNR will also be used for work on Canal Road East.


The Waterway East Boulevard work will include the following:


  • Intersection Improvements to State Route 59 East 29th Avenue


  • Roadway, drainage and pedestrian improvements to East Second Avenue


  • Roundabout at East 29th Avenue and East Second Street


  • Roadway, drainage and pedestrian improvements to East second Street


  • Roadway, drainage and pedestrian improvements to Waterway East Boulevard.


  • Extend Waterway East Boulevard from the Claude Petite Mariculture Center to the proposed ALDOT free bridge


During the work session, the council will also discuss:


  • Budget amendment 2 to reflect an increase of $11.2 million in revenue and an increase of general fund expense of $5.2 million.


  • Voiding some “stale-dated” checks that haven’t been cashed, some from as far back as 2013.


  • Updating the credit cards authorization list to raise the amounts available to the detention officer, fire logistics officer, IT systems supervisor, Cultural Center programs and events manager, retail operations coordinator, concessions manager, recreation manager and the managing librarian.


  • The fire department’s Firefighter of the Year for the third quarter, veteran Johnathan Sellers who has worked with the city since 2011. He recently completed paramedic training and is a Company Officer with the department.


  • Authorizing a mutual aid agreement with the Alabama Association of Fire Chiefs to “provide an understanding between and among public fire protection agencies of Alabama.”


  • Declaring seven vehicles in the police department as surplus and recommending their sale or donation.


  • Authorizing the mayor to contract with Ben Radcliff Contractors for $4.4 million to build an eight-classroom addition at Gulf Shores Elementary School. The city previously spent $960,016 for site prep work, design fees and program management for a total project cost of $5.2 million.


  • Issuing a public assembly permit for the city’s Sims Park Christmas Celebration on Dec. 12.


  • Awarding a bid to SiteOne Landscape Supply which had the lowest bid at $2.47 a pound which was better than Coastal Industrial Supply’s from Robertsdale at $2.85 a pound.

Foley Preparing Work to Transfer Beach Express to State

As Alabama prepares to buy the bridge at the southern end of the Foley Beach Express, city officials are continuing plans to improve the route before it becomes a state highway. The Alabama Department of Transportation has announced plans to buy the bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway in Orange Beach. State officials said the toll over the bridge will be eliminated when the purchase is completed.

On Sunday afternoon, April 28th, the Gulf Shores Police responded to a robbery at the Arby's located at 1515 Gulf Shores Parkway. The incident occurred at 3:33 PM, when a man threatened an employee with what appeared to be a semi-automatic pistol. He demanded money and car keys.

Davidson was last seen around 5:12 AM near Bay John Condominiums at 4297 County Road 6.
