Police chase through Alabama and FloridaBy Foley Police Dept.
December 20, 2018 - Foley, AL - (OBA®) - On Wednesday, December 19, 2018, at approximately 6 p.m. a Foley Police Officer observed a vehicle stopped in the southbound lane of Highway 59 at the intersection of Highway 98.
As the officer approached what he suspected was a disable vehicle, he observed that the driver was passed out behind the wheel.
The officer was finally able to get the driver's attention after beating on the window.  It appeared the driver may be under the influence of something, but before the officer could get him to exit the vehicle, the driver quickly sped off, and a pursuit was initiated with the suspected impaired driver.
Foley Police Officers were able to successfully deploy spike strips at the intersection of Fern Ave. and Highway 59 causing the driver's front left tire to deflate.
The subject continued south on Highway 59 into Gulf Shores and the turned east on Highway 182 going into Orange Beach and then continued into Escambia County Florida on the Beach Road.
During the pursuit, the driver deliberately struck police vehicles both in Foley and Orange Beach.
It was a low speed pursuit with the driver staying around 35 mph at first but eventually reaching speeds around 65 mph at times.
It appeared several times that the deflated tire and damage to the vehicle was about to disable it, but once the vehicle entered into Escambia County FL and approached a heavier populated and traveled area the pursuit was discontinued.
Approximately an hour later, ALEA came into contact with the vehicle disabled on Interstate 10 near mile marker 57.
The driver barricaded himself inside, but eventually surrendered to officers.  He was identified as John Simmon Tyson of Butler AL.
The Foley Police Department is working with the Baldwin County District Attorney’s office and the other involved agencies on criminal charges related to this incident.
Possible charges include Eluding, Attempted Assault 1st Degree, Criminal Mischief, and DUI.
