Clouds will soon start rolling in ahead of what’s expected to be a severe line of storms coming in on Thursday, April 18, 2019. Spring breakers from Mobile and Baldwin counties were taking advantage of one of the last nice beach days before Easter on Wednesday. Plenty of folks went to Cotton Bayou Public Beach in Orange Beach to enjoy the calm before the storms.

An Alabama city is stressing its family-friendly status

Orange Beach in nearby Alabama took up much of this slack.

After PCB shut its spring break down, this family-friendly locale was besieged by rowdy college students, forcing Mayor Tony Kennon to enact a similarly strict approach to law enforcement. An incredible 800 arrests were made in 2016, but that fell to 200 last year.

Purple flags – indicating the presence of dangerous marine animals – were flying late last week in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores due to the presence of Portuguese Man O’ War, a jellyfish-like creature capable of stinging humans. Those purple flags were taken down Saturday.

Dozens of alcohol-related Spring Break arrests already in Orange Beach, Gulf Shores

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. (WKRG) — As people flock to Baldwin County beaches for Spring Break, dozens have already been arrested for various alcohol-related offenses.

The arrests include 30 people in Orange Beach and 23 people in Gulf Shores. Among those arrested have been minors in possession of alcohol.

When Gulf Shores first banned alcohol on the beach to stifle unruly spring breakers who had fled a similar crackdown in Panama City, not all businesses in the resort town were on board. But the business at the beach has not gone away. Both sales taxes and lodging taxes have increased every year since 2015, the year before Gulf Shores instituted an emergency ban in the middle of the spring break season.

Spring Break 2019 is fast approaching and businesses in Gulf Shores are getting ready for the first big crowds of the season. The first schools break on March 9th and the last won’t be out until the week of Easter. Seagulls and snowbirds were about the only visitors to Gulf Shores beaches Tuesday, February 26, 2019, but in less than two weeks, they’ll be making way for spring breakers from colleges all over the region. Because Easter falls so late this year, spring break will stretch out for more than a month.
