Passerby praised for ‘heroic’ rescue attempt in Intracoastal Waterway | fox10tv.com

GULF SHORES, Ala. (WALA) - A passerby is being recognized for his heroic attempt to save a man after the man accidentally drove his vehicle into the Intracoastal Waterway in Gulf Shores.

Gary Gabel, 66, died after his SUV was swallowed by water Friday morning.

23-year-old Blake Clark who was driving by, jumped into the water and swam to the vehicle, in an attempt to save the trapped Gabel. Video shows Gabel's red SUV nose diving into the water with Clark swimming next to it.

America’s Cup sailboat American Magic in Pensacola for winter training

New York Yacht Club American Magic, U.S. Challenger for the 36th America’s Cup, today announced that the Port of Pensacola will serve as the team’s winter training base in late 2018 and early 2019. The team was formed in 2017 to win the America’s Cup, the highest prize in sailing and the oldest trophy in international sports.

GULF SHORES, Ala. (WALA) - A Gulf Shores High School student is getting national recognition for her use of graphite and paper to create incredibly detailed portraits. Lilliana Betz won two Gold Keys from the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, which is the highest regional award possible in the competition. The Gulf Shores senior will be recognized at Carnegie Hall in New York City for her two winning pieces of work. “I mean I don’t like attention drawn to me a whole lot, but it does feel good to have people appreciate it," Betz said.

"I'm super, super busy now, and I mean, thank God for that," Jay told News 5 when we traveled up to Montgomery to catch up with him. "I mean I went from doing open mics to national TV."

Former NFL player motivating Baldwin school kids this week

(WKRG) -- If you have a 9th grader in Baldwin County Public Schools odds are they’re getting a motivational pep talk from this man this week. Keith Davis is a former NFL player turned motivational speaker. While his short pro ball career didn’t make him a household name Davis hopes his message to the kids is something to remember and he hopes it inspires them to strive to be the best they can be. Davis says he grew up in what he’s described as an unstable home and wants students to know that no matter where you come from, you can succeed.

Fairhope HS engineering students prep moon buggy for NASA competition | fox10tv.com

Engineering students at Fairhope High School are building something out-of-this-world. It’s a moon buggy and it will be entered in a competition at NASA’s Marshall Space Center in Huntsville. The group of eleven students has been working on it since the beginning of the school year and it’s starting to take shape.

Byrd, a Veteran who lived in the home for more than 20 years, says  he lost everything in the fire, but the Bible his grandfather gave him, somehow, was still in tact.
