Gulf State Park lodge shines in Ivey’s pre-inauguration party – Lagniappe Mobile

January 14, 2019
Since the 1970s Joe Gilchrist has had a hand in running perhaps the most famous bar on the northern Gulf Coast, the Flora-Bama Lounge, Oyster Bar and Package Store. For a lot of those years, he watched as groups visiting his bar were down here for a meeting or event at the Gulf State Park Lodge. “Having taken over the Flora-Bama over 40 years ago, the old convention center was an important part of the community,” Gilchrist said. “After [Hurricane Ivan] we lost that and it’s been over 15 years. To me, I know how much it helps the community to have a facility you so you can do conventions and other things.”

An Alabama inauguration first: Ivey holding pre-event party at the beach | al.com

January 11, 2019
In 2016, coastal Alabama lawmakers battled politicians across the state over how to spend a $1 billion BP oil spill settlement. Hot rhetoric filled Statehouse chambers prompted by distrust from coastal Democrats and Republicans alike about a decision by Montgomery’s power brokers to funnel a lion’s share of the BP compensation to patch the state’s gaping budget holes. Fast forward to Saturday, and some of those same combatants are likely to be exchanging pleasantries and enjoying hors d’oeuvres together as they welcome in the new governor.

Master plan calls for closing Gulf State Park golf course – Lagniappe Mobile

November 29, 2018
Much of the news involving Gulf State Park has lately been positive. Its 350-room motel and convention center recently opened, while the Interpretive Center and East Pedestrian Bridge have been a hit at the Beach Pavilion. However, park officials just announced the 18-hole golf course will be closing as of Dec. 2. Known as “The Refuge,” the 6,593-yard-long facility has wrapped through the natural scenery of the park since opening in 1974. It includes a driving range and a putting green.

Give Gulf Shores its bridge – Lagniappe Mobile

November 29, 2018
Residents came out in droves to an Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) public hearing for an additional bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway earlier this month. The proposed bridge would supplement the area’s two existing bridges, one designated for Alabama Highway 59 and the other a toll bridge for the Foley Beach Express. The bridge is expected to act as a spur from the Foley Beach Express and connect to Canal Road, which runs adjacent to the southern shore of the Intracoastal Waterway.

Orange Beach mayor pitches north-south beach road, but settlement may prevent it | al.com

November 17, 2018
A federal lawsuit that was settled last year, and which enabled a new beachside conference center and hotel complex to move forward, bluntly declares that no north-south connecting road can be built through a popular coastal Alabama state park for the next 20 years. At least one coastal Alabama public official has other views after the state announced Thursday that a golf course, located on the northern edges of Gulf State Park, is closing on December 2.

Gulf State Park Golf Course set to close on December 2nd

November 15, 2018
November 15, 2018 - Gulf Shores, AL - (OBA®) - Due to a saturation of golf courses in the region and the opportunity to provide new nature-based recreational opportunities at Gulf State Park, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ALDCNR) officials announced this week that the Gulf State Park’s golf course will close in December. Chris Blankenship, commissioner of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, said the state park’s golf course has been losing money for several years and that he “could not in good conscience” allow our financial resources to continue to be diverted to subsidize the golf course while there are many other possibilities for the use of that property that can provide varied outdoor experiences for our guests and the community.”

The Lodge at Gulf State Park Opens with Great Fanfare | Outdoor Alabama

November 09, 2018
The fanfare that accompanied last week’s ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open The Lodge at Gulf State Park, a Hilton Hotel, was unprecedented, a fact affirmed by a pair of experts in the field of lodging and hospitality. With Governor Kay Ivey headlining a long list of dignitaries at the grand opening of the long-awaited facility, the Gulf Shores High School marching band played the National Anthem as Gulf Shores Navy JROTC cadets presented the colors in front of the large crowd that gathered only steps from the white-sand beaches of the Gulf of Mexico.
