Alabama lawmaker wants to slow breakaway city school systems | al.com

February 14, 2019
Sen. Linda Coleman-Madison, D-Birmingham, is back with a bill to stop small cities from breaking away and forming their own school districts. A Senate committee debated a similar bill last year, and Coleman-Madison decided to pull it from consideration at that time. This year’s bill differs from last year’s in only one way: a city would be blocked from breaking away if it had fewer than 15,000 residents, down from 25,000 in last year’s bill. Currently, under state law, a city needs only 5,000 residents to break away from a county and form a new school district.
